Box Score DURANGO, Colo. – September 18, 2014 – Late rallies in the fourth and fifth sets fell short for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team Thursday night as they opened their home season against Colorado Christian University. The Skyhawks fell in five sets (25-15, 16-25, 25-20, 23-25, 14-16). The match also marked the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season opener.
Late in the fourth set, the Skyhawks trailed by nine points, 22-13, before going on a 9-2 run and forcing the Cougars to commit five straight errors to bring the potential deciding match within two points, 24-22. CCU closed out the set, 25-23, to tie the match at 2-2.
Down five points (12-7) in the fifth set, the Skyhawks rallied again to go on a 7-2 run and knotted the game 14-14. Back to back kills by CCU's Taylor Sturms ended the Skyhawks chances for a comeback as CCU won, 16-14.
Ashely Wells and
Emily Dellenbach tallied 12 kills each. Dellenbach did not commit an error on 26 attempts to hit .462 at the net.
Ciara Krening posted 25 set assists and two service aces.
Kennedy Clark added 19 assists and six digs.
Ally Dell'Amico and Wells combined for 41digs.
The Skyhawks blocked nine of the Cougars attempts with
Shelby Lehman and
Madi Bickle assisting on three blocks each.
Four Cougars recorded at least 10 kills with Kaylee Pierce posting a match high 16. Anjela Jurek added seven kills and four blocks.
Fort Lewis will continue their three game home stand Friday against Regis University. First serve will go out at 5 p.m.
