Football Downed at No. 7 Colorado Mines, 48-28

GOLDEN, Colo. – October 17, 2015 – An explosive first half for the Fort Lewis College football team had the Skyhawks trailing by seven points at No. 7 Colorado School of Mines Saturday afternoon at Marv Kay Stadium.  The Skyhawks were held to seven points in the second half as the Orediggers scored 20 unanswered points to remain undefeated, 48-28.
 
The Orediggers (7-5, 5-0 RMAC) jumped to a quick 14-0 lead in the first six minutes of the opening quarter before quarterback Jordan Doyle put FLC on the scoreboard when he ran into the end zone from five yards out. 
 
Colorado Mines scored touchdowns on their first three drives of the game for a 21-7 lead.  Doyle brought the Skyhawks to within seven points when he rushed in from 20 yards out to cap a seven play, 76-yard drive.
 
On the ensuing drive, Michael Benabides intercepted Justin Dvorak in the Skyhawks end zone for a touchback.  The Skyhawks drive started at 8:13 in the second quarter and FLC marched down the field 80 yards on 13 plays and knotted the game at 21-21 when Doyle found Juquelle Thompson for a two-yard score.  The Skyhawks drive was kept alive by Allen Thigpen who rushed for four yards on a fake punt on a fourth-and-two situation on the fifth play of the drive.
 
The Orediggers quickly answered and ran four plays in 53 seconds to regain the lead, 28-21 with 1:19 left in the half.
 
Trailing by seven to begin the second half, the Skyhawks opened their first drive of the game on their 25-yard line.  Doyle took the first snap of the half and ran 75 yards for his third rushing touchdown of the game to even the score at 28.
 
The Skyhawks were held scoreless the remainder of the game as CSM found the end zone two more times and made two field goals for the final score, 48-28.
 
Doyle rushed for 108 yards but was sacked five times for a loss of 38 yards.  He netted 67 rushing yards and three touchdowns.  He completed 19-of-31 passes for 49 yards and one touchdown.
 
PJ Hall added 74 rushing yards on 20 carries.  Thompson caught eight passes for 81 yards and Esley Simmons added five catches for 92 receiving yards.
 
Defensively, Theo Chambers, Ryneal Lewis-Adams and Shane Nelson each posted eight tackles.

Dvorak finished the game completing 26-of-46 passes for five touchdowns and 415 yards (one interception).  Ty Young led both teams with 115 receiving yards.
 
After two weeks on the road, the Skyhawks (4-3, 3-2 RMAC) will host Colorado Mesa University on Oct. 24 at 12 p.m.
