CHADRON, Neb. – November 14, 2015 – Trailing 22-20 heading into the fourth quarter at Chadron State College, the Fort Lewis College football team scored 27 points in the final quarter to post a 47-34 win in the last game of the season.
Saturday's win ends the Skyhawks season at 7-4 overall and 6-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The seven overall wins and six conference wins are the most since 2006 when FLC finished 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the RMAC.
FLC trailed early, 15-0, after one quarter of play. Sophomore running back
PJ Hall put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard at 12:43 in the second quarter with a one yard run to cap off an 11-play, 65-yard drive.
FLC forced the Eagles to a three-and-out. A 66-yard punt pinned the Skyhawks on their own three-yard line to start their drive. Five plays and 97-yards later Hall ran it in again from one yard out to cut the lead to 15-14.
The Eagles responded on the next drive to score their third touchdown of the game and end the half with a 22-14 lead.
The Skyhawks second drive of the second half started on the FLC 20-yard line. The seventh play of the drive resulted in a touchdown when
Allen Thigpen threw a 44-yard pass to
Juquelle Thompson. A failed two-point attempt brought the Skyhawks to within two points of CSC, 22-20, after three quarters.
On the ensuing drive, the Eagles punted the ball away to give the Skyhawks the ball on their 23-yard line. Hall rushed twice for three yards before Thigpen found
Esley Simmons III for a 44-yard reception. Three plays later Thigpen found Thompson for a 30-yard touchdown strike to take a 33-22 lead.
Drake Griffin found the end zone with 2:48 left in the game to take a 40-22 lead. CSC answered on their next drive to get within 12 points of the Skyhawks, 40-28. The Eagles recovered an onside kick with 97 seconds left in regulation which resulted in a touchdown to cut FLC's lead down, 40-34.
CSC attempted another onside kick that was recovered by Thigpen who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown with 14 ticks left in the game. The Skyhawks defense held CSC to 16 yards on three plays as time ran out to seal the win, 47-34.
Fort Lewis carried the ball 52 times for 299 yards and held the Eagles to 144 rushing yards. Both teams combined for 996 yards of total offense. FLC accumulated 499 yards on 64 plays to average 7.8 yards per play.
Thigpen led the Skyhawks with 157 rushing yards on 17 carries. He completed 9-of-12 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns and two sacks.
Thompson caught five passes for 105 yards and two scores and added 106 return yards.
Andrew Ike and
Ryneal Lewis-Adams posted nine tackles to lead the Skyhawks defense.
Dalten Lane and
Sione Folaumoeloa combined for a sack and a loss of four yards. Ike added a forced fumble and Folaumoeloa tallied 2.5 tackles for a loss of six yards.
