GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – March 1, 2015 –
Sara McMahon scored three second half goals and
Marissa DiCecco netted the game-winning goal to lead the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team to a 7-6 win at Colorado Mesa University Sunday afternoon. The season opening win also marked the first career win for first year head coach
Julia Decker.
Rebecca Miller put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard first just 44 seconds into the game with an assist from
Ellie Carpenter. CMU tied the game at 27:18 before
Taylor Cabrera posted her first career goal after picking up a ground ball and finding the back of the net at 16:35. CMU tied the game with 89 seconds left in the first half as both teams went into halftime tied, 2-2.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game at 27:11 in the second half but McMahon scored her first of three goals to knot the game at 25:52. The Mavericks responded and scored the next three goals to take a 6-3 lead over the Skyhawks with 16:34 left in regulation.
Fort Lewis answered by scoring the final four goals of the game.
Jam Vertner netted her first goal of the season at 15:31. Nine minutes later McMahon scored back-to-back goals. Her goal with 5:33 left in regulation was a man-up goal and tied the game at 6-6 (assist Carpenter). DiCecco sealed the win at 4:11 to give the Skyhawks a 7-6 win.
DiCecco, Miller and McMahon each posted four shots in the game and Vertner added three.
Katlyne Duffey and
Alyssa Spencer each picked up three ground balls. Spencer made 11 saves for her first win of the season in goal.
Fort Lewis recorded 19 shots in the game, two less than CMU. FLC picked up 15 ground balls to CMU's 11, and the Skyhawks won seven of the 15 draw controls.
The Skyhawks will play their first home game of the season on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m. against Westminster College.
