Volleyball Wins Season Opener at OPSU Aggies Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GOODWELL, Okla. – September 4, 2015 – Led behind a solid offense and defense, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team posted a 3-1 win Friday morning at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in the OPSU Aggies Challenge at the Oscar Williams Fieldhouse in Goodwell, Okla.  The Skyhawks won the match 25-15, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-21.  FLC fell to Sterling College in the second match, 3-1.

In the season opening match against Oklahoma Panhandle State, Fort Lewis hit a solid .200 for the match, including .344 in the fourth set (15 kills, four errors, 32 attempts). The Skyhawks added 10 aces, four which came from Hannah Martinez and three from Ally Dell'Amico.

Matisse Monty led both teams with 15 kills on 30 attempts.  She hit .333 for the match, second behind Maddie LeBlanc's match high .455 (six kills, one error on 11 attempts).  Dell'Amico added a match high 18 digs while Delaney Scanlan notched 27 set assists, 13 digs and one block.

"There was definitely some nerves in the first game with our young players getting comfortable," said head coach Kelley Rifilato.  "But once we got in the flow we played really well with our blocking, defense and serving.  In the second set we struggled with passing but pulled it together and by the end of the match we hit .344.  Delaney did a good job spreading the ball out.  What impressed me the most was our limited hitting errors. That's something with a young team we can use to build on our successes."

In Friday's second match, the Skyhawks faced NAIA Sterling College from Kan. and fell in four sets, 26-24, 18-25, 20-25 and 24-26.

Monty and Gabriella Hickman notched 13 kills each against Sterling off of Delaney's 23 set assists.  Dell'Amico dug up 29 attacks from SC.

The Skyhawks will face Northwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday morning at 8 a.m.  Their fourth and final match of the weekend will be determined after bracket play.
