ST. GEORGE, Utah – November 12, 2016 – A second half comeback fell short for the Fort Lewis College football team Saturday afternoon at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. The Skyhawks ended their season with a 16-14 setback to the Trailblazers.
FLC fumbled the ball on the fourth play of the game, giving DSU the ball on FLC's 36-yard line. The Trailblazers scored on their first play of the game after DeJon Coleman rushed in from 36 yards for a 7-0 DSU lead.
DSU extended their lead to 14-0 with 11:35 left in the first half on Coleman's second rushing touchdown of the game. On the ensuing drive, FLC was forced to punt for the third straight drive. DSU blocked the punt in the Skyhawks endzone resulting in a safety and a 16-0 Trailblazers lead.
Quarterback
Bo Coleman cut DSU's lead down to eight points after rushing in a three-yard touchdown with seven seconds left in the half to cap a nine play, 75-yard drive. Coleman added two points on the two-point conversion on a successful run into the endzone.
FLC entered halftime trailing 16-8.
After a scoreless third quarter by both teams, the Skyhawks scored the only touchdown of the second half when Coleman found
Arealous Hughes for a 67-yard touchdown strike. FLC's two-point attempt to tie the game at 16-16 failed.
With 76 seconds left in regulation, FLC's attempt to take a 17-16 lead was thwarted after a missed 39-yard field goal attempt.
Coleman finished the game completing 5-of-13 passes for 144 yards and one touchdown. He added 73 rushing yards on 19 attempts.
Drake Griffin carried the ball 16 times for 83 yards. Hughes caught two passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Daniel Walker led FLC's defense with nine tackles (seven solo stops).
OJ Thompson added seven tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss of two yards.
The Skyhawks ran 59 plays for 340 yards of total offense. FLC was held to two conversions on 13 attempts.
Fort Lewis' defense held the Trailblazers to 55 passing yards after completing 5-of-11 passes.
With the loss, FLC finishes 2016 with a 4-7 overall record and a 3-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference mark. Dixie State's 6-5 season was their first winning season as a Division II program.
