ST. CHARLES, Mo. – May 6, 2016 – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse season came to a close Friday afternoon in St. Charles, Mo. The Skyhawks fell to fourth-ranked Lindenwood University in the semifinal game of the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
FLC was down early in the game, 7-0, before senior
Ellie Carpenter put the Skyhawks on the board at 20:12 of the first half.
Sara McMahon added another goal to cut the lead to 7-2. Carpenter found the back of the net for the second time in the half with just 1:33 left as the Skyhawks went into halftime trailing Lindenwood, 7-3.
McMahon started the second half off with a goal at 25:21.
Carly Smoke chipped in her sixth goal of the season at 19:26 to bring the Skyhawks to within six goals, 11-5.
Ryann Pierce and
Marissa DiCecco combined to score three straight goals for FLC, but the Skyhawks were held scoreless in the final 78 seconds as LU netted two more goals to seal the win, 16-8.
FLC won 16 of the 25 draw controls, but were outshot 29-26.
Pierce led FLC with seven shots on goal and eight shot attempts. Carpenter tallied a team high four ground balls and three draw controls, while
Katlyne Duffey added three ground balls. Duffey,
Natalie Mitchell and Carpenter shared team high honors with two caused turnovers.
Junior goalkeeper
Alyssa Spencer made six saves in goal.
Fort Lewis finishes the season 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
