Football Faces Grizzlies in 52nd Annual Musket Game

9/14/2017 4:08:00 PM

Fort Lewis College will face Adams State University Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in the 52nd annual Musket Game.

Adams State leads the Musket Game series, 34-16-1, and the all-time series lead, 37-17-1.

FLC has won the last two Musket Game meetings, and three of the last four.

The Springfield .45-70 military issue rifle that serves as the traveling trophy between Fort Lewis College and Adams State University was donated in 1966 to the two athletic departments by Mahlon "Butch"
White, who was involved with the First National Banks in both Alamosa and Durango, in memory of William White. The rifle is to be retained by the winning school at their annual football game.  Traditionally, seniors from the winning team get to fire the rifle at the conclusion the game.

Fort Lewis will face the top offensive team in the league on Saturday.  The Grizzlies lead the RMAC in scoring offense (46.0 points per game), total offense (591 yards per game), pass offense (437 yards per game) and pass efficiency (158.2).

The Skyhawks boast the third best defense in the RMAC, allowing 348 yards per game and 19 points per game.

FLC leads the league in interceptions with four.  Fort Lewis also has the best turnover margin in the conference, forcing six turnovers without committing one turnover.

The Skyhawks have recorded a pick six in each of their first two games.

FLC's clock management is tops in the RMAC, possessing the ball an average of 35:05 minutes per game, more than two minutes longer than the next opponent.

The Skyhawks are coming off their first win of the season after defeating Black Hills State University on the road last Saturday, 17-13.  The win was the Skyhawks second victory over the YellowJackets, and first time defeating them on the road.

Frank Larriva forced two fumbles against Black Hills State, including a sack with 22 seconds left in the game.  With BHSU on the Skyhawks 34-yard line, Larriva sacked the YellowJackets quarterback, forcing a fumble recovered by Christian Blanton on the FLC 37-yard line, sealing the Skyhawks first win of the season.

Trailing 13-10 in the fourth quarter, Donell Pleasant III intercepted BHSU and returned it 37 yards into the endzone, resulting in the final score of the game, 17-13.

Sophomore punter Max Peets was named the RMAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.  Peets punted 12 times on Saturday, averaging 45.6 yards per punt.  His longest punt of the day went for 53 yards, while eight of his punts were at least 45 yards.  He landed two punts inside the 20-yard line and six punts were fair caught.

Senior running back PJ Hall has 2,765 rushing yards on 577 carries (4.8 yards per carry), and 13 rushing touchdowns.  He is 801 yards shy of tying the all-time rushing record, held by Joe Moore (3,566 yards).
