RAPID CITY, S.D. – Although the scoreboard didn't fully show it, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team controlled play from start to finish on their way to taking the 2-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over South Dakota Mines Friday evening.
FLC (7-5-2, 5-5-1 RMAC) piled up 19 shots to just five for South Dakota Mines (2-10-3, 1-7-3 RMAC) including a 14-3 edge on goal. FLC also had a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks and the game featured 24 fouls, with 13 committed by the Hardrockers.
Right away, the Skyhawks had a few chances, with Bar Hazut just missing high and then after a pair of corner kicks by Ty Lang, Raul Pescador got a shot on the first one that was saved and then he delivered on his next try at the 13:15 mark when he found the back of the net off an assist by Hazut for his first goal of the season.
The pressure kept coming from FLC and following a few saves by Ventura Salcido, the Skyhawks doubled their lead when Coleman Kane knocked in his third goal of the season at the 41:17 mark for the 2-0 lead. Ryan Lee helped set him up on the play.
South Dakota Mines answered just over four minutes into the second half with their first goal of the game to pull to within one at 2-1. The goal ended up coming from the goalie Kyle Daledovich. FLC shut down the Hardrockers from that point on, not allowing a shot over the final 40 minutes of the game.
Lang, Robby Baca and Kane almost added to the lead with a few more scoring chances, but Daledovich made the saves to keep the final score at 2-1 for the Skyhawks.
Pescador and Lee led the team with four shots apiece, with Lang adding three. Salcido went all 90 minutes in goal and collected two saves to grab the win.
Ian Debois led South Dakota Mines with two shots, with Daledovich playing all 90 minutes in net and recording 12 saves.
FLC will remain on the road to face #5 Colorado School of Mines Sunday in Golden starting at noon. The Orediggers tied with Colorado Mesa 1-1 earlier on Friday.
