Longacre Leads Volleyball at Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Bailey Longacre came away with nine kills and also added a block, but behind a strong .328 hitting percentage, Colorado Christian University was able to get past the Fort Lewis College volleyball team 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-19) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Saturday night.

CCU (9-11, 7-4 RMAC) used hitting percentages of .389, .237 and .357 for a .328 percentage overall to take the victory. FLC (4-11, 4-7 RMAC) had their best offensive set in the third hitting .226. Longacre had nine kills and a solo block to lead the way. Tye Wedhorn added six kills and Haley Christiansen with five. Kendra Swackenberg added 21 assists and both Christiansen and Megan Graefe had 12 digs apiece.

A Wedhorn kill early in the first set even things at three before the Cougars went on a 6-0 spurt to open up a 9-3 advantage. A pair of Longacre kills near the midway point of the set helped spark a run to get back to within five at 20-15. Christiansen kept the set alive with a kill at 24-17 before Colorado Christian recorded a kill from Katie Henry for the 25-17 opening set win.

Christiansen and Wedhorn posted a pair of kills to get the second set going and help keep FLC within three. Trailing 6-3, the Cougars went on a 9-0 run to open up a 15-3 lead. Wedhorn and Longacre tallied kills to end the run and then Longacre sent back a solo block, but it was just too much Cougars. Colorado Christian closed the set on a 4-0 run for a 25-9 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

In a theme of the night, Colorado Christian used an early run to help open up some breathing room as they used a 5-0 run to open up a 4-2 lead and make it 9-2 on the third set. FLC chipped away, pulling back to within four at 15-11 following a kill by Jacalyn Sharko, a kill by Swackenberg and a pair of errors by the Cougars. The Skyhawks continued to stay close, getting to within five a few more times, first at 22-17, at 23-18 and one last time at 24-19 before Colorado Christian closed the third set and the match with a kill by Kaylee Rogers at 25-19.

Henry and Ashley Drye paced the Cougars with 11 kills apiece. Kylee Wurster dished out 42 assists, while on defense Rogers and Jasa Scheierman sent back two blocks and Mariela Gonzalez had 19 digs.

FLC will return home to host Black Hills State University on Friday starting at 7 p.m. inside Whalen Gym. The Skyhawks are tied for eighth in the RMAC with three other teams including Black Hills State, New Mexico Highlands and Westminster.
