Skyhawks and Grizzlies Play Epic Overtime Musket Game in Alamosa

ALAMOSA, Colo. – With the Musket on the line, both teams went toe-to-toe all the way until the end. It even took and extra period to finish the game as Adams State University was able to score on their opening possession of overtime and then held the Fort Lewis College football team to preserve the 48-42 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon at Rex Stadium.

The game was everything you could've hoped for from a fans perspective. Not only did both teams have a chance to win the game, but both offenses and defenses made plays, along with the special teams.

ASU (3-2, 3-2 RMAC) got out to a quick start scoring just over three minutes in when Nick Rooney M. Surrell for a 92-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Surrell was just getting started, as he went on to add a 15-yard TD catch before the end of the first quarter to give the Grizzlies a 14-0 lead entering the second quarter.

Midway through the second frame, the FLC (1-4, 1-4 RMAC) defense came up big with a strip-sack of Rooney deep in ASU territory. Tim Paogofie recorded the sack and then the fumble to setup the Skyhawk offense at the Adams State 11.

Beau McCannon eventually capped the drive with a 33 yard field goal to make it a 14-3 game with 7:47 to play before halftime. It wouldn't be the last time McCannon would be called on.

Just as quickly as FLC got on the board, the Grizzlies answered with a five play drive that was capped by a 33-yard TD strike for a 21-3 advantage.

FLC controlled the remainder of the half to get right back into the contest. On the ensuing drive. The Skyhawks picked up a big third down with a six yard Brayden Lucero run. On the second third down of the drive at the Grizzly four, Nick McNamee found Tajon Mondy-Smith in the end zone for the four-yard score to leave ASU in front 21-10.

Before the half ended, Cam Thierry came up big. With ASU across midfield and on the move, Rooney was intercepted by Thierry at the FLC 40 and Thierry returned it all 60 yards for the pick-six to leave FLC down just four, 21-17, at halftime.

The Skyhawks got the ball first to start the second half and promptly marched 10 plays to take their first lead of the game. On the drive, FLC picked up a fourth down on a defensive offside and then at the ASU 23, McNamee hit Arealous Hughes for the 23-yard touchdown to move FLC to the 24-21 lead.

The Grizzlies responded by scoring on their next drive and then cashed in a turnover early in the fourth quarter into another touchdown to pull ahead 35-24 with 13:11 to play in the game.

The Skyhawks kept fighting and after the teams traded possessions, FLC got back into it with a 74 yard drive the took six plays. Lucero started the drive with a 19-yard scamper and then a 31-yard pass from McNamee to Mason Hatton had FLC at the ASU 24. A few plays later, McNamee hit his tight end Sam Kullberg in the end zone from four yards out on third down. FLC then went for two and it was successful when McNamee connected with Mondy-Smith to make it a three-point game at 35-32.

The defense forced a quick three-and-out and the offense took over out near midfield. Just four plays later, McNamee hit a streaking Hatton down the seam for a 39-yard touchdown that moved FLC back in front at 39-35 with 3:32 to play.

ASU came back, converting a big early third-and-eight with a Rooney 13-yard run to keep the drive alive. They ended up going 75 yards in nine plays when Tyree Harris ended the drive with a three-yard rush for a score to move the Grizzlies to a 42-39 lead with just 29 seconds to play.

Things didn't look good for FLC, but after a squib kick that was returned 16 yards by Sam Adams out near midfield, that had the Skyhawks in business. McNamee then completed passes to Hatton and Hughes that moved the ball to the ASU 37. With just six seconds on the clock, out came McCannon to attempt a game-tying field goal. But, before he could get the kick off, the Grizzlies were penalized for 12 men on the field that moved the ball to the 32. McCannon then calmly drilled the 49 yard field goal to tie the game at 42 and send the game into overtime.

FLC won the toss to start OT and elected to play defense. ASU took just two plays to find the end zone as Rooney hit Miles Fishback for the 15-yard touchdown. The extra point, however, was missed, making it just a 48-42 lead.

The Skyhawks got off to a tough start, as an intentional grounding penalty made it second-and-15 at the ASU 30. Three straight incomplete pass attempts followed and that sent Adams State to the 48-42 victory.

Adams State ended up with 618 yards of offense to 336 for Fort Lewis. Both teams chewed up most of the yardage through the air as Adams State had 468 passing yards to 270 for Fort Lewis. Individually, McNamee completed 27-45 for 270, with four touchdowns. He had a long pass of 39 yards. Lucero rushed 15 times for 73 yards, with a long of 19. Hatton caught seven passes for 87 yards with a score, while Hughes added five catches for 78 yards with a touchdown. Kullberg and Mondy-Smith added touchdown catches as well.

On defense, Donell Pleasant III had another big game with a team-high 10 tackles, seven solo, along with a forced fumble and pass defended. Isiah Mayberry added eight tackles. Blayke De La Rosa had 2.5 sacks.

For Adams State, Rooney completed 32-41 for 468 yards and five touchdowns. Harris rushed 23 times for 115 yards with two scores. Surrell caught 14 passes for 268 yards and two scores. Chad Hovasse added 10 catches for 139 yards and a score.

On defense, Isaia Rosten had eight tackles, while Garrett Jackson and Sipa Leafa added seven tackles apiece. Pemelton posted two sacks. Leafa also added an interception.

FLC will now return home this coming Saturday when they will host Colorado Mesa for homecoming starting at noon. Colorado Mines defeated Colorado Mesa, 72-31, earlier Saturday in Golden.
