Westminster Holds Off Late Push From Men’s Soccer

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team brought the pressure in the second half, collecting five shots, but Will Desantis was able to keep the Skyhawks off the scoreboard as Westminster held on for the 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster (8-1-1, 4-1-1 RMAC) came out shooting in the first half against Fort Lewis (5-2-2, 3-2-1 RMAC) holding a 9-3 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes of play. It was a different story in the second half with each team generating five shots. Each team landed four shots on net.

It took a while before either team was able to get a few shots off in the first half. The Griffins took a pair of shots just past the 20 minute mark, but a few went wide and Ventura Salcido collected the other one that ended up on goal. A few minutes later, Max Fuentes Carrera recorded the first shot on goal for FLC that was saved by Desantis.

After a scoreless first half, FLC came out ready firing a pair of shots just over nine minutes in by Steen Shober and Bar Hazut that were both saved by Desantis. Right after the Skyhawks generated some chances, Westminster was able to turn the field and Alec Marshall launched a shot from outside the box that tipped off of Salcido's fingers and into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute.

FLC got a few more shots off over the final seconds of play, with one blocked and then one right before the horn by Hakeem Rabiu that was saved by Desantis to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Westminster held a 14-8 edge on shots, 6-0 advantage on corner kicks and committed nine fouls to eight for FLC.

Raul Pescador led the way with two shots, while Landon Gibson, Ty Lang, Rabiu, Shober and Fuentes Carrera all added a shot. Salcido played all 90 minutes in net and made three saves.

Jake Jensen paced Westminster with four shots, while Danny Darelli added three. Desantis played all 90 minutes in net and collected four saves.

It was the first time this season that the Skyhawks have been shutout.

FLC will now return home for four straight at Dirks Field beginning this Friday against Regis starting at 3:30 p.m. They will close the weekend on Sunday against UC-Colorado Springs at 2:30 p.m. The Skyhawks are 3-0-1 at home this year.
