FLC tops New Mexico Highlands in four sets

LAS VEGAS, New Mexico — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team picked up a much-needed victory on Saturday night, closing out a two-match road trip with a four-set victory over New Mexico Highlands University.

"These kids deserved a win and it was fun to watch them grind it out," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "They needed to see some success and we had a good group of family members in the crowd, so it was an emotional match for a lot of girls."

Fort Lewis (6-11 overall, 2-6 RMAC) got off to a fast start, downing the hometown Cowgirls (1-16 overall, 0-9 RMAC) by set scores of 25-22 and 25-20 in the first two sets.

"I think because of how well we played in those first two sets, even after having some trouble in the third set, we still played with confidence," Melfy said.

Leading the charge for the Skyhawks was senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre, who powered down 13 kills and tallied a team-high seven block assists to pace the Skyhawks.

"Bailey just played well. Blocking and hitting, she was fantastic," Melfy said. "Kamryn Lopez also had 23 digs, so between Kamryn and Bailey, they were our highlights."

The 23 digs for Lopez were a team-high and the second most of her young career. She was one of five Fort Lewis players to finish in double-figures, joined by junior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff (15 digs) , senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley (12 digs), as well as freshmen Payton Harmann¸who set up 34 assists on the evening, and Joviana Romero with 11 digs apiece.

Shirley also joined Longacre as the two FLC players with double-digit kill totals as the senior hammered down 12 kills on a team-high 48 swings.

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a three-match homestand, starting with a 7 p.m. matchup against Adams State on Tuesday.

"I think the girls are excited to get back in the gym. I think they're ready to get to work and know that 'if we do a little bit more, work a little bit harder to create options for ourselves, we'll win a couple more matches,'" Melfy said. "They're ready to get in the gym and I'm excited to see that this week."
