Sluggish start plagues Skyhawks in 1-0 road loss to Regis

DENVER, Colorado — After a fantastic September that saw the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team finish the month undefeated, the Skyhawks have hit a little snag in October as Sunday's 1-0 road loss to Regis University dropped FLC to 6-3-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the RMAC.

Regis (7-4-1 overall, 6-2 RMAC) was able to get control of the game early, posting a 12-1 shots advantage in the first half and tallying what proved to be the game-winner at the 15:33 mark.

"We just didn't show up (Sunday). We were lackadaisical from the start, gave up another early goal and it wasn't until later in the game that we started to show a little bit of spirit," said Fort Lewis College head coach, David Oberholtzer. "When you do that, it's difficult to win games. We weren't ready for the battle."

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne did his best to keep the Skyhawks within striking distance as he stopped eight of the nine shots on goal he faced Sunday.

Fort Lewis was able to manage a late charge in the game's final minutes, earning back-to-back corner kick opportunities with 2:33 and 1:51 remaining. Senior defenseman Marshall Metzger fired a shot on goal with 1:09 remaining on the clock, but had his potential equalizer stopped by Regis goalkeeper, Tim Dolan.

The Skyhawks will look to right the ship when they travel out to Utah next weekend for games against Dixie State University (7:30 p.m. Friday) and Westminster College (1 p.m. Sunday.

Fort Lewis saw both teams during Homecoming weekend, picking up a 1-0 win over Westminster before falling 4-1 to Dixie State; the first loss of the season at that time for the Skyhawks and origin of its current three-game skid.

"This was another one of those hard lessons. If you don't compete and you're not ready to compete, it's going to be difficult to win games," Oberholtzer said. "But we'll fix some things this week. We're very capable of going and getting three points on Friday. If we look back to the last time we played Dixie State a week ago at Dirks, we had the better play for the majority of the game (21-14 shots advantage). We just had a few mental errors that they capitalized on.  The ability is there, we just need to get back on track confidence wise. This has been a tough three games in a row for the group to swallow, but if we can come together again as a group and start moving in the right direction, good things will happen."
