Skyhawks fall to nationally ranked Rangers, snap three-match win streak

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team had its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday, falling in three sets (25-21, 25-18 and 25-13) to No. 15 ranked Regis University inside Whalen Gymnasium.

Fort Lewis (8-12 overall, 4-7 RMAC) battled toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Rangers (14-5 overall, 9-2 RMAC) early on, holding a 13-11 lead in Set One, before Regis rallied back to claim the first set, 25-21.

The Skyhawks again challenged the Rangers deep into Set Two, climbing within one at 17-16, before the Rangers closed on an 8-2 run to take control of the match up two sets.
"We didn't play scared at all. I think we just got outplayed (Saturday)," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "But I'd rather lose a math where the other team earned it versus we gave it and we didn't give it tonight. I thought for the most part we played well."

The size of Regis' front line posed a problem on both sides of the ball for the Skyhawks in the form of Nikki Kennedy (6-foot-, 4-inches), Izzy Gosar (6'0) and Kristen Hornung (6'2).
Gosar and Kennedy led the Rangers with 13 kills and 11 kills, respectively, while Hornung had 2.5 total blocks.

"We had to make some adjustments because they (Rangers) are huge. It's hard to block 6'4 hitters, but it's not an excuse. We weren't really able to make the adjustments we needed to and they were able to tee-off," Melfy said.

While the Rangers only produced seven blocks, Melfy said the Skyhawks' showed some hesitation on offense against the big Regis front.

"We started to get a little cautious and that was the only thing I felt the block did to us," Melfy said. "Instead of staying aggressive, we got a little passive and we were worrying about getting blocked instead of actually getting blocked."

Sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn was a bright spot as she continued her resurgence with eight kills to lead all FLC players, while seniors Ohiyah Shirley and Bailey Longacre added six kills and five kills, respectively.

Defensively, freshman setter Payton Harmann tied fellow freshman Kamryn Lopez for the team-high with nine digs to go with her 21 assists. Shirley followed with eight digs while the duo of freshman Joviana Romero and junior Alexa Treguboff each chipped in seven digs.

Fort Lewis, winners of three of its last four, will continue its hunt to climb inside the top-10 of the RMAC standings next week when it kicks off a four-match road swing, starting at 7 p.m. Friday against South Dakota School of Mines.

"Our goal is to make the RMAC Tournament, so we'll continue to take it one match at a time," Melfy said. "We're trying to figure out this whole travel thing and it's not easy. It's not an excuse, but a reality that it's hard to get off a bus after a 14-hour drive and try to execute the next day. But I think at least if you have some confidence — and I think we're back in the hunt and have a shot with those three wins — I think bus or no bus, the girls know they have it in them now."
