FLC men's soccer falls by 2-0 final on the road against Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team had to settle for a split during its Utah road trip, falling by a 2-0 final on Sunday in its second meeting of the season against Westminster College.

Fort Lewis (7-4-3 overall, 5-4-1 RMAC) defeated the Griffins (9-3-2 overall, 6-1-2 RMAC) back on Oct. 4 during Homecoming weekend and the two teams again battled toe-to-toe with each other on Saturday.

"It was a good game and Westminster is a really strong team," said Fort Lewis head coach, David Oberholtzer. "I thought we had control early those first 15 or 20 minutes and then just let it slip out of our hands and (Westminster) started to take over."

Westminster got on the scoreboard first in the 31st minute on a goal from Adir Hazout, and then scored the backbreaker just 18 seconds into the second half when Skyler Kjellander capitalize on a rare miscue by the Skyhawks' defense.

"We started to strain from the game plan and going away from the things that were working for us. Giving up that second goal so early in the second half on a silly misplay was critical," Oberholtzer said. "At 1-0, we're fine and can still can get back in the game real quick. But that soft second goal right at the beginning of the half didn't help our cause."

Westminster finished with a 15-5 shots advantage on Sunday, while the Skyhawks owned the edge in corner kicks, 4-1.

Junior forward Brantley Bice, the hero on Friday when he scored the overtime game-winner against Dixie State, led all Skyhawks will three shots.

In net, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrnes stopped four of the six shots on goal that he faced.

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward a key four-game home stand to end the regular season, starting with a 3:30 p.m. showdown on Friday against conference leaders Colorado School of Mines.

Fort Lewis currently sits in fifth-place (16 points) in the logjam RMAC standings, with the third through eighth-place teams separated by just eight points as teams continue to battle it out for the six RMAC Tournament berths.

"It's certainly going to be nice to be home and back on Dirks. It feels like we've been on the road all year long," Oberholtzer said. "You can see in the RMAC standings right now that it is still extremely tight with teams fighting for playoff spots. But we just need to keep focusing on ourselves and one game at a time. We'll focus on getting three points on Friday and go from there."
