Five different players score in Skyhawks' rout of Hardrockers

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team exploded for five goals on Sunday, from five different goal scorers, to coast to a 5-0 rout of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

With the victory, the Skyhawks produced their season-high in goals scored to polish off a six-point weekend inched to within one point of Colorado Mesa University for fourth place in the RMAC standings.

"It was fun to see the guys score some really good goals (Sunday), and with five different goal scorers, it was good to be able to spread the joy around," said Fort Lewis head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "I thought we made some really good moves in the final third of the field to create good looks and the guys put things on target. I don't think there was too much different from every other game we've played, we were just able to put a few more in the back of the net today."

Fort Lewis (9-4-3 overall, 7-4-1 RMAC) wasted little time taking control of Sunday's contest, striking for three first-half goals against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (3-10-1 overall, 2-9-1 RMAC) within the first 32 minutes and nine seconds of game action.

Junior midfielder Brantley Bice recorded his fourth goal of the season, and third in the last four games, at the 18:07 mark on an assisted by freshman Ruben Neubauer.

Bice and Neubauer were also at the center of the Skyhawks' second goal as the duo each picked up an assist on Ryan Lee's fifth goal of the season as he cleaned up the rebound off a Bice shot inside the box.

"I honestly think this could have happened a lot earlier in the year for him," Oberholtzer said of Bice, who has scored eight of his team-leading 13 points in the month of October. "Brantley probably hit 4-5 posts or crossbars leading up to these past couple of games, so he was a little unfortunate to not be scoring and getting assists earlier in the year. But it's coming together for him now and he's been a key piece to our attack and effort on the defensive end of the field, as well."

The Skyhawks capped off their high-scoring first half at the 32:09 mark when junior midfielder Alejandro Arribas finished off a cross from sophomore defenseman Denis Celik.

It was precisely the start Fort Lewis was looking for following its 2-1 win over Colorado School of Mines on Friday, and following the disappointment of settling for a split last weekend out in Utah.

"The big thing was making sure we came out with a clean slate mentality and knew we still had to go earn the three points," Oberholtzer said. "To go out and get three goals in the first half I thought was a great response from the group."

Over the final 45 minutes, the Skyhawks pumped in two more goals as junior Hakeem Rabiu netted his fourth of the season off a feed from senior defenseman Ty Lang in the 74th minute.

Celik then capped the game's scoring in the 77th minute, set up by Arribas and junior midfielder Max Fuentes Carrera, for his first career goal as a Skyhawk.

The back line for the Skyhawks finished with two goals and three assists while also limiting the Hardrockers to four shots on goal, all safely corralled by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne for the team's seventh shutout of the season.

"We were solid all the way around on the back line and I thought they set the tone for us playing big, strong and winning balls out of the air," Oberholtzer said. "They did a great job communicating and organizing us. We weren't really tested much (Sunday) in large part because of the work they were doing and snuffing things out early and helping us play out."
Up next for the Skyhawks they will conclude their four-game home stand to end the regular season with pivotal matchups against rivals Colorado Mesa University (3 p.m. Friday) and Colorado State University-Pueblo (1:30 p.m. Sunday).

"This next weekend will be just as crucial as this weekend was," Oberholtzer said. "Two big games and we want to get points from each one of them."
