Wolfblack Records Hat Trick as Lacrosse Battles to the end Versus Westminster

DURANGO, Colo. – Allena Wolfblack posted a hat trick, while Delaney Benson and Mia White each scored two goals apiece as the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team fought back to take the lead in the second half before Westminster College closed the game on a 5-1 run to take the 13-10 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday afternoon at Ray Dennison Field.

The game featured lots of shots with the teams combining for 61, including 48 landing on goal. Westminster held the 36-25 edge on total shots and 26-22 on goal. While turnovers (22-21 Fort Lewis) and groundballs (28-27 Westminster) were fairly even, the Griffins held a big 18-7 edge on draw controls.

Wolfblack had a big game for the Skyhawks collecting the hat trick on five shots, with all five landing on goal. Benson tallied her two goals on four shots on goal and White added two goals on five shots on goal. Abby Escandon, Maren Clark and Rachel Hurst all added goals. Escandon dished out four assists, Daris Wienk had seven groundballs, Escandon and Aitana Rivera each forced three turnovers and Ann Nelson had three draw controls. Wienk played all 60 minutes in goal and made 13 saves.

Westminster (2-6, 2-2 RMAC) opened the scoring just 58 seconds in on a goal by Katie Hendershott. FLC (1-4, 1-3 RMAC) fought back after Wienk picked up a groundball and had a solid clear attempt to setup Benson for her eighth goal of the season at the 27:46 mark.

White pushed the Skyhawks in front when she took a long pass from Wienk and buried it home for her fifth goal of the season at the 24:11 mark and a 2-1 lead. Wolfblack scored the first of her three goals to break at two-all tie at the 21:02 mark taking a great pass from Escandon and tallying the third goal for FLC to keep the Skyhawks ahead at 3-2.

The Griffins then reeled off the next four goals to open a 6-3 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the half. Out of a Skyhawk timeout, FLC responded as Wolfblack converted on a penalty by Westminster to score with the extra player as she took another assist from Escandon in front and put the shot in to trim the deficit to two.

With under five minutes to play in the half, a strong defensive play by FLC led to a turnover and after Kylee Cosse collected the groundball, Clark got loose for her fifth goal of the season slicing right through the defense and leaving Westminster with just a 6-5 lead.

Wolfblack recorded her hat trick all in the first half as she scored her sixth goal of the season with 43 seconds to play on another similar pass from Escandon at the side of the net to bury the shot and tie the game at six.

Before the teams went to halftime, Westminster was able to get a goal with just 13 seconds to play to take a 7-6 lead into the break.

White picked up her sixth goal of the season just over four minutes into the second half when Escandon found her in front for the tying goal at seven-all.
After the Griffins regained the lead, back-to-back goals for FLC in just over a minute of time moved the Skyhawks in front. Escandon evened the score with a nice individual move from the side of the goal and then off a penalty, Benson scored her ninth goal of the season off a free position shot to move FLC out to the 9-8 lead with 19:34 to play.

Westminster then started to take over, scoring the next three goals to move out to a 11-9 lead with nine minutes to play.

Out of a Skyhawk timeout, FLC fought back when Escandon forced a turnover and then picked up the groundball. Eventually Hurst ended up with the ball and she broke free down the middle and ripped the shot home for her fifth goal of the season to keep the deficit at one.

The Griffins were then able to put the game out of reach as a pair of goals within 28 seconds moved Westminster to the 13-10 lead with just over two minutes to play.

The Skyhawks had a few more rushes that included a shot, but the Griffins would hang on for the win.

Eden Freiberg led the Griffins with six points including five goals. Audree Erekson, Hendershott and Madie Ingman added two goals apiece. Mikala Anderson had seven groundballs, Daisy Mele caused three turnovers and Erekson had nine draw controls. Anderson played all 60 minutes in goal and tallied 12 saves.

FLC will now return to action on Sunday, April 7 when they will host UC-Colorado Springs for Senior Day at Ray Dennison Field starting at noon.
