Lacrosse Battles #15 Colorado Mesa in Regular Season Finale

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Delaney Benson tallied a second half goal, but #15 Colorado Mesa used a big first half to get past the Fort Lewis College lacrosse team 19-1 Friday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Colorado Mesa (13-2, 7-2 RMAC) held a 44-11 edge on shots, including 33-5 on goal. The Mavericks also held the advantage in groundballs (27-16) and draw controls (15-7). Colorado Mesa tallied 11 goals in the first half to jump out to the early lead.

Benson recorded her goal at the 16:50 mark of the second half for FLC (2-6, 2-7 RMAC). Daris Wienk was solid in net turning back 14 shots in playing all 60 minutes. Benson, Abby Escandon, Ann Nelson, Maren Clark and Rachel Hurst all led the Skyhawks with two shots, while Benson and Clark each had two land on goal. Wienk grabbed four groundballs, Aitana Rivera caused four turnovers, with Benson adding three and Nelson picked up four draw controls.

Danielle Simpson led Colorado Mesa with seven points, including five goals. Marissa Leonardi also added a hat trick. In net, Cami Huff went the first 30 minutes and collected a save to get the win. Lula Mitchell played the second half and made three saves.

It was the final game as Skyhawks for seniors Aitana Rivera and Allena Wolfblack. Rivera had two groundballs and four caused turnovers, while Wolfblack added a groundball and a caused turnover.
