PUEBLO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's golf team opened its 2019-2020 season this week, competing Monday and Tuesday at the Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo at the Pueblo Country Club.

Fort Lewis finished in 11th place with a team score of +89 (665) and were led by a pair of upperclassmen in senior Summer Vigil and junior Sophie Schwartz.

Vigil produced a pair of consistent rounds for the Skyhawks, shooting a +10 (82) during Monday's first round then trimming her score to a +8 (80) on Tuesday. She finished the tournament tied for 26th overall at +18 (162) for the tournament.

The senior did the bulk of her damage on par 3s as Vigil tied for the fifth-best tournament score (+2) on par 3s out of 75 total players.

"Summer didn't shoot a bad round on Monday, she just didn't finish as well as she's use to," said Fort Lewis head golf coach, Jim Foltz. "Her putting and chipping was a tad bit off and it cost her a couple strokes. But (Tuesday), we worked on that out on the range before her round and she felt better today."

Schwartz posted the Skyhawks' best individual round of the tournament on Tuesday as she bounced back from a +14 (86) on Day One to card a +7 (79) on Day Two. Her surge on Tuesday moved her up 21 spots from where she started the day, giving her a tie for 35th place overall with a tournament score of +21 (165).

"She's a scrapper. She does not quit, does not give up and she doesn't let things bother her," Foltz said of Schwartz. "She's always positive, so with that attitude you can't go wrong. She's shown the ability to bounce back after a tough round and I knew she would."

Fort Lewis also saw bright spots from junior Amanda Westrick, who shot a +11 (83) on Tuesday and finished the tournament tied for 52nd with a score of +28 (172), as well as true freshmen Peyton Glenn and Brooke Sturtevant.

Glenn shots rounds of +15 (87) and +16 (88), respectively, in her first collegiate action to finish tied for 57th overall at +31 (175).

As for Sturtevant, she got her tournament off to a tremendous start on Monday as she paced all Skyhawks with a first-round score of +8 (80). She hit a minor snag in the second round, shooting a +19 (91) to finish the tournament in a tie for 50th overall at +27 (171).

"Brooke played like a champ and a veteran on the first day," Foltz said. "I was extremely pleased with that. But, as it sometimes goes with freshmen, there are going to be times when they are tried and our freshmen were pretty challenged (Tuesday). The greens were extremely fast and difficult."

Fort Lewis will now prepare for its second fall tournament, the Maverick Invitational, scheduled for Sept. 23-24 at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

Foltz said three new players will make that trip for the Skyhawks as the coaching staff aims to give everyone a chance to prove themselves prior to the spring season.

"I'm pleased with how we played this week. But with this being our non-championship season, I want to get a look at everyone and give them a chance," Foltz said.  "The fall schedule is all about sorting out who our lineup will be in the spring. I'm happy with all our young players. We just need to get them experience."
