Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | David Lee Wilson

Skyhawks and St. Mary's finish in 0-0 draw to wrap up non-conference action

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday in Colorado Spring, earning a 0-0 tie in its neutral site showdown against St. Mary's University.

For the Skyhawks (2-0-2 overall), the draw marked the second straight weekend where they earned a victory on Friday, but had to settle for ties in the second game of the road trip.

"What we're still preaching and trying to find is our consistency," said Fort Lewis assistant coach, Keane Hamilton. "We haven't yet been able to play that full 90 minutes with the level of focus and intensity we want for two games in a weekend. We've seen flashes were we're up to the standard we want, then some patches where our focus and intensity isn't quite there. Hopefully, after these first two weekends, our fitness is now at a point where we can work as hard as we want to for an entire game and that should make it easier to keep our mental focus for an entire 90 minutes, as well."

The Rattlers (2-1-1 overall) finished with a 21-11 shots advantage Sunday, with only eight of them on goal as the Fort Lewis back four defenders were able to limit the quality of scoring chances faced by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper, Peter Byrne.

Byrne stopped all eight shots he faced, lowering his goals against average to 0.90 in the early going of 2019 to go with an 84% save percentage.

"I thought we could have played a little tighter in the midfield. St Mary's definitely had more scoring chances, but I thought we had the more clear-cut chances," Hamilton said. "Peter made a number of saves, but all of them were saves we'd expect him to make."

Offensively, the Skyhawks produced four corner kick opportunities and five shots on goal, including two from junior forward Ryan Lee, who played hero with the game-winning goal in Friday's 3-2 victory over St. Edward's University.

Hamilton said Fort Lewis was pleased with the quality of its scoring chances, but inevitably it was just tough sledding for both team's offenses in Sunday's matinee.

"We didn't move the ball the way we'd normally like to. The few very good chances we had, we just couldn't find the back of the net."

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward their RMAC opener, set for 7 p.m. Friday on the road against rival Colorado Mesa University.

"We're incredibly excited to get into RMAC teams. We've had a great rivalry with Colorado Mesa the last couple years and those are always hard-fought games," Hamilton said. "We won't be expecting anything less. I'm confident that, if we're where we need to be, we can come out with the win."
