Skyhawks lose 3-0 in Saturday showdown against UCCS

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team wrapped up its home back-to-back Saturday evening, falling in straight sets (25-14, 25-19 and 25-16) to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Consistently generating offense continued to be the Achilles' heel for the Skyhawks (4-9 overall, 0-4 RMAC) as they finished the evening with a .064 attack percentage, 24 kills and 17 errors on 110 swings.

Conversely, the visiting Mountain Lions produced 52 kills and 11 errors on 115 attempts for a .357 attack percentage to help keep the Skyhawks at bay.

Senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley was a bright spot Saturday for Fort Lewis as Shirley powered down a team-high eight kills and only had one error in her 23 attempts for a season-best .304 attack percentage.

Shirley, a 5-11 hitter out of Kayenta, Arizona, also added five digs and one of the Skyhawks' four service aces.

Junior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff followed with five kills, while senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre and freshman setter Payton Harmann each chipped in three kills apiece.

Harmann, who added 19 assists, also led the defensive charge for the Skyhawks with a team-high 10 digs, followed by freshman defensive specialist Joviana Romero with nine digs and Treguboff with seven digs.

Fort Lewis will look to right the ship when it continues a four-match home stand at 7 p.m. Friday, October 4 against Westminster College.

Fans are encouraged to bring a pair of new or lightly use shoes to the game that evening as the FLC volleyball team is again spearheading the efforts for the local Soles4Souls shoe drive. Fans who donate will gain free admission into Friday's match.
