Skyhawks fall by 2-1 final in Friday's road clash against Regis

DENVER, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team, still jockeying for one of six RMAC Tournament playoff spots, dropped a tough 2-1 final on the road Friday against Regis University.

Fort Lewis (7-8-1 overall, 4-5 RMAC) entered the day in a four-way tie for fifth place (12 points) in the RMAC standings with two games remaining. As for the Rangers (8-7-1 overall, 4-5 RMAC), the win kept their season alive entering Sunday's regular season finales.

Regis kicked off the game's scoring early on as Vilhjamur Kaldal struck for his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 11th minute to put the Rangers ahead, 1-0.
The Rangers would add what proved to be a much-needed insurance goal at the 65:38 mark when Michael Jimenez finished off a feed from Jean Carre to up the Regis lead to 2-0.

Fort Lewis was able to inch back within one in the 78th minute, courtesy of the third penalty kick goal of the season from freshman forward Gabriel Legendre, who put four of his team-high five shots on goal Friday. The score was Legendre's sixth of the fall, tying him with fellow freshman Tomas Duenes for the FLC team lead.

The Skyhawks, who dominated total shots (25-16) and shots on goal (11-6), tried to mount a furious rally with six shots taken over the final 12 minutes of play, but were unfortunately unable to sneak an equalizer past Rangers goalkeeper Tim Dolan, who made a career-high 10 saves on the afternoon.

FLC senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne made four saves in net for the Skyhawks, giving him 46 stops on the season; currently the sixth most among all RMAC goalies.

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward an 11 a.m. road matchup against South Dakota Mines (1-14-1 overall, 0-9 RMAC) on Sunday to conclude the RMAC regular season schedule.

Fort Lewis is currently in a five-way tie for 5th place with 12 points alongside MSU Denver, Colorado Christian, UCCS and Regis. FLC will likely need a win over the Hardrockers on Sunday, and a little help from around the conference, to punch its ticket to a third straight RMAC Tournament pending multiple potential tiebreaker scenarios.
