Skyhawks fall on the road in overtime thriller against No. 15 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Playing against nationally ranked Colorado Mesa for the second time in as many weeks, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team fell just shy of sweeping the season series as the No. 15 Mavericks rallied for a 2-1 final in overtime Friday evening out in Grand Junction.

Fort Lewis (4-5-1 overall, 1-2-0 RMAC) won the first matchup (2-1) between the two teams back on Sept. 24 and had produced six straight results — three wins and three ties — against their rival dating back to 2017.

After a scoreless first half, the Skyhawks put the first tally on the board in the 50th minute when sophomore midfielder Aymaro Vargas threaded a pass to a streaking Tomas Duenes, who promptly delivered a rocket off the hands of CMU goalkeeper, Connor Durant.

The goal was the third of the season for Duenes, second on the team behind fellow freshman Gabriel Legendre (5), while the assist was the third helper of the fall for Vargas.

Unfortunately for FLC, the Mavericks (9-2-0 overall, 3-0-0 RMAC) were able to break through in the 64th minute on a score just outside the box from Joey Joiner to even the game at 1-1.

CMU finished with a 26-18 shots advantage in the back-and-forth affair, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Skyhawks were on the doorstep of leaving Mavericks Field victorious with 1:11 remaining in regulation as a foul in the box by CMU on a FLC corner kick led to a penalty kick opportunity.

Legendre, 2-for-2 on his PK attempts this season entering the match, fired a dart that beat Durant, but had the ball glance off the crossbar and shoot straight down, denying the Skyhawks the go-ahead goal.

With momentum back on their side, the Mavericks were able to net the game-winner with 1:32 remaining in the first overtime period on the second goal of the game by Joiner; a quick strike inside the Skyhawks' box after a feed from Aaron Martinez.

In net, senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne stopped a season-high eight shots; the most saves made in a game since he turned away nine shots against Dixie State University back on Oct. 18, 2019.

Fort Lewis will now look to bounce back Sunday when it concludes the weekend road trip against Westminster College (5-6-0 overall, 2-1-0 RMAC). Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Dumke Field in Salt Lake City, Utah.
