FLC Football inks seven recruits on National Signing Day

2/3/2021 1:07:00 PM

DURANGO, Colorado — During an unusual and unprecedented offseason for college football staffs, Fort Lewis College head football coach Darrius G. Smith thought back to 1994 while he and his assistants assembled his first National Signing Day class as the leader of the FLC program.

As the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic forced coaches to be creative, persistent and diligent when it came to recruitment during a socially distanced 2020, limiting travel and in-person visits, Smith drew from experience he learned firsthand in the mid-90’s as a young assistant coach at Frostburg State University.

Just get them on the line.

“I think the thing that helped me the most in developing this recruiting class was that I use to be a NCAA Division III coach, where you didn’t go on the road a lot. It was phone calls and, back then, it was letter writing,” Smith said. “It was the old school way of recruiting (in 2020) and that was, ‘Get the kids on line.’ Get on the phone with them, Zoom meetings with them. In the recruiting game, you can talk to a lot of kids, but how well do you get to know them? At Fort Lewis, I want to make sure we’re bringing in the right young men to the program, to the area and to the community. Having that extra knowledge from all the conversations we had with these recruits, that was huge.”

The Skyhawks inked seven recruits during Wednesday’s National Signing Day, welcoming a Class of 2021 that features six incoming freshmen and one junior college transfer. Fort Lewis is anticipating additional signees in the coming days and added four preferred walk-ons to the fold on Wednesday, as well.

Recruiting the state of Colorado was a point of emphasis for Smith and his staff as the Skyhawks signed five Colorado prep stars, which include quarterbacks Nolan Bynum (Delta HS) and Jack Hanenburg (Ponderosa HS), wide receivers Calvin Raab (Heritage HS) and Colbi Braslin (Delta), as well as Ponderosa offensive lineman Parker Webb.

Fort Lewis also welcomed New Mexico linebacker Ayden Madrid (Bernalillo HS), and defensive end Thomas Chiazor, a Los Angeles native and junior transfer from Santa Monica College.

Rather than recruit by volume, Smith said the Skyhawks coaching staff specifically targeted all eight of their signees based not just on their high talent levels, but also their team fit and desire to be at Fort Lewis College.

“It’s important to me as a recruiter than we dive in hard on the guys that we want. That was our approach,” Smith said. “I think all of these guys in due time are going to contribute a lot for us. How fast will depending on how fast they develop, how fast they are willing to compete and excel over, not only the people beside them, but the people in front of them. The beauty about this class is that they were all targeted and they all wanted to be here.”

Nolan Bynum sign

Nolan Bynum | QB | 6’1 | 190 | Delta, CO. | Delta High School

Bynum comes to FLC after a successful prep career that saw him lead Delta High School to the Class 2A state title game in 2019, and a No. 2 ranking in the state in 2020 prior to being sidelined with an injury.

He threw for over 4,600 yards during his high school career in 30 games, highlighted by a junior season that saw him throw for 2,556 yards, 34 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while posting a quarterback rating of 120.1. His breakout season earned him Class 2A First-Team All-State honors.

Bynum added 14 touchdowns and nearly 600 rushing yards with his legs during his four years at Delta, while also completing passes at a 55% clip.

He has a great arm and is a great leader from what we could see on film and from talking to other coaches in the area. He’s a field general. He commands and directed things on the field and has a good understanding of the game. He plays with a chip on his shoulder and this whole class has a little bit of an edge to them. When we talk about targeting recruits, he exuded that.

Jack Hanenburg sign

Jack Hanenburg | QB | 6’0 | 205 | Parker, CO. | Ponderosa High School

Hanenburg provides another intriguing young quarterback for the Skyhawks. The left-hander was a Class 4A First-Team All-State selection at Ponderosa High School, finishing the 2020 season 11th in the state in passing yards (1,334) to go with 15 touchdowns versus 4 interceptions.

The Parker native posted a QBR rating of 129.0 as a senior in seven games and completed 65% of his passes, averaging 190 pass yards and 41 rush yards per contest for a Ponderosa offense that ranked fifth in Class 4A at 36.1 points per game.

Both quarterbacks we signed are guys who are going to compete and are field generals. Some coaches are sometimes afraid to go after a left-hander, but I want the best guy on the field. Jack can run the offense that I want to implement. He can scramble and throw the ball on the run, extend plays. He’s an accurate quarterback who doesn’t do bad things with the football. He makes great decisions with the ball.

Colbi Braslin sign

Colbi Braslin | WR |6’5 | 210 | Delta, CO. | Delta High School

Braslin joins his Delta teammate Nolan Bynum in signing with the Skyhawks, providing FLC with a big-body receiver with the versatility to line up outside or potentially at the tight end position.

During his senior season at Delta, Braslin recorded 30 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 74 receiving yards per game.

He’s a big body receiver who is still learning his body. He’s got a very good catch radius and has shown some athleticism and versatility that will probably let us move him around. The two things that you can’t coach are speed and height. If you get that height coming through the door, you have a foundation to build on.

Parker Webb sign

Parker Webb | OL | 6’8 | 315 | Parker, CO. | Ponderosa High School

Webb’s size and strength make him a tantalizing recruit for the Skyhawks, standing at a towering 6-foot, 8-inches and 315 pounds.

He was part of a Ponderosa offense, alongside PHS and FLC teammate Jack Hanenburg, that racked up the seventh most yards in Class 4A (2,542) and averaged 366 yards per game.

To have a big 6’8 offensive lineman coming in — I’m sure he’ll need to mature a little bit since the game speeds up at the offensive line position — gives he and Jack a little continuity as freshmen. The biggest thing about Parker, besides his natural size, is he has long arms and the athleticism to maybe be a tackle for us. But being able to turn that big body into a guard to play on the interior for us, that’ll be a big plus.
Darrius G. Smith, Head Football Coach
Calvin Raab sign

Calvin Raab | WR | 6’3 | 185 | Littleton, CO. | Heritage High School

Raab is a second-generation Skyhawk football player, joining his father Michael Raab (1989-93) to play at the next level representing Fort Lewis. In six games as a senior, Raab made 21 catches for 319 yards, averaging 53.2 yards per game, and added four touchdowns.

(Raab) is another guy with a great catch radius, possesses the ball and I can see him as another inside guy for us or developing into an outside guy. He runs very good routes, very good in and out of his breaks. But the thing I liked the most is he is another young man with very long arms that, if we throw up that 60-40 ball to him, we should have the advantage. His development will be how fast he can adjust to the speed of everything from high school.
Darrius G. Smith, Head Football Coach

Ayden Madrid | 5’10 | 200 | Bernalillo, N.M. | Bernalillo High School

A dual threat as a running back and linebacker in high school, Madrid profiles as a high energy and active linebacker for the Skyhawks at the next level.

Madrid broke the single-season state record with 173 tackles in 2019 as a junior, 66 of them being solo tackles to go along with five sacks. His performance earned him All-Metro Defensive Player of the Year, All-District MVP and First-Team All-Metro as an inside linebacker in 2019.

Offensively, he added 927 rushing yards, 17 rush touchdowns and 223 receiving yards out of the backfield.

Ayden is coming in as a defensive player. His aggressiveness is the level of aggressiveness I want in the program. To have that as a freshman walking through the door will be exceptional. He played for John Cobos, who I coached at New Mexico Highlands. Ayden embodies the things I liked about John when he played at Highlands. He’s aggressive, smart and instinctive to the ball.

Thomas Chiazor sign

Thomas Chiazor | DE | 6’0 | 280 | Los Angeles, CA. | Santa Monica College

Chiazor comes to Durango after spending one season with Santa Monica College, where he played in five games in 2019 and recorded 10 tackles and three tackles for loss.

The Los Angeles native has long been on the Skyhawks’ radar and provides a versatile pass rusher and run stopper along the defensive front.

He’s a guy who can play defensive end for us or also played in the three technique over the guard. He’s a big, massive and wide body guy who is athletic enough he could have played at the FCS level. We were recruiting Thomas last year along with our other mid-year transfers we were fortunate to sign. He reached back out to us, let us know he was still interested, and he wanted to go where he was wanted and felt like he could contribute. When he reached out to us, I said ‘If he’s serious, let’s get him in the boat now.’
