Skyhawks set program records in 25-1 road rout of Adams State to open RMAC play

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team opened up RMAC action Saturday with a dominating performance against Adams State University, setting two program records for goals (25) and margin of victory (24) in a 25-1 road win over the Grizzlies.

The 25 goals stand alone atop the FLC record book, just ahead of the 24 goals the Skyhawks (2-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) scored last March 10 in a 24-2 victory over Cornell College and a 24-2 win over Adams State (0-1 overall, 0-1 RMAC) back on March 19, 2011.

"When I found out last year that we tied the school record (against Cornell College), but missed setting it by one goal, I was a little upset," joked FLC head women's lacrosse coach, Ashley Travis. "I told the girls today that, if we could beat the record, we were going to do it. But we didn't want to force anything or take bad opportunities. We were able to get everybody in the game and had a lot of different goal scorers, which boosted their confidence and our whole team's confidence."

Eleven different Skyhawks would tally at least one goal Saturday, led by freshman attacker Haley Dostie as she poured in four goals on just five shot attempts.

Fellow freshmen Caprietta Abbadessa, Ellie Martinez and Alyssa Strough all added three goals apiece, as well, to help lead a wave of young goal scorers the Skyhawks are hoping will break out this spring.

"I wanted to get those girls a little confidence today, get them out there scoring some goals and they did just that," Travis said. "They placed their shots, they took good opportunities at the goal and did all the things we've been working on at practice. I'm super proud of them and they all had great games, offensively."

Senior attacker Abby Escandon led all Skyhawks with five total points, notching three goals and two assists, while sophomore Liv Crawford (2 goals, 2 assists), junior Maren Clark (2 goals, 1 assist), freshman Rebecca Kiyokawa (1 goal), sophomore Autumn Rymerson (1 goal) and senior midfielder Ann Nelson (1 goal, 3 assists) rounded out the Skyhawks' scoring.

Through three games, Nelson leads Fort Lewis in scoring with nine goals and 12 total points.

Defensively, the Skyhawks were just as solid as they limited Adams State to four total shots, including just two shots on goal. The one goal allowed and two shots on goal allowed also tied program records, last set during the 2019 season against the Grizzlies.

Fort Lewis also finished with a 28-9 advantage in ground balls and limited ASU to 2-for-5 on clear attempts.

Kiyokawa led the Skyhawks with a career-high 10 ground balls. Clark followed with four ground balls, while Nelson and freshman Nina Polk each added three apiece.

"We re-defended really well. Any time we did turn the ball over on attack, the girls hustled back and defended well to get the ball back," Travis said. "I think the ball was on their offensive side 4-5 times the whole game, so the girls really hustled to get those back-checks, get those turnovers, and get those ground balls."

Fort Lewis will look to build off Saturday's performance when it heads out to Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday for a clash against Westminster College. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Dumke Field.
