Jean-Baptiste nets two goals, Skyhawks roll to 4-0 victory over Adams State on Senior Day

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team ended the 2021 regular season in style Sunday, rolling to a 4-0 victory over Adams State University on Senior Day.

Fort Lewis (4-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 RMAC) dominated Sunday's action from the opening kick-off, finishing with a 25-5 shots advantage and netting three first-half goals to put the game out of reach early.

"I mentioned it to the guys after Friday, and we've been talking about it all year, that we've created a lot of great chances but hadn't been creating separation for ourselves. We hadn't been scoring enough goals," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "We wanted to come in and score goals (Sunday) and I was happy we were able to do that. We got an early goal 10-15 minutes into the game and really didn't let our foot off the gas the entire first half."

The Skyhawks blitzed the visiting Grizzlies (0-6-0 overall, 0-6-0 RMAC) out of the gate, getting the game's scoring underway in the 13th minute when sophomore Kanon Tebo headed in a crossing pass from junior defenseman, Andres Hernandez.

Fort Lewis would net two more goals in the first half in quick succession as redshirt junior Loic Jean-Baptiste took a long lead pass from Brantley Bice and buried his shot in the bottom right-hand corner to make it 2-0 at the 33:34 mark.

Less than eight minutes later, senior midfielder Alejandro Arribas scored his second goal of the season, unassisted, capitalizing on a giveaway by the Adams State back line.

FLC put the cherry on top in the 84th minute when Jean-Baptiste tallied his second goal of the game, this time off a touch pass from fellow forward, Gabriel Legendre.

With the two goals, Jean-Baptiste takes over the team lead with three this season. The Frenchmen led the Skyhawks in scoring a season ago and is starting to hit his stride heading into the RMAC Tournament.

"It was great to see Loic score a couple goals, absolutely," Oberholtzer said. "And we think he is still capable of producing more. With playoffs around the corner, this was a breakout for him and hopefully we can continue to see more of that."

Defensively, the Skyhawks limited the Grizzlies to just two shots on goal for the afternoon, each handled cleanly by sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Wilmore.

Sunday marked the first start and victory of Wilmore's young career as he got the nod relieving redshirt junior Peter Byrne.

"Getting Danny the opportunity to start; he's earned it and deserved it," Oberholtzer said. "He's been working hard in practice and this game was a good opportunity to find him some minutes and give him some experience."

Fort Lewis will have a week off to rest, recover and prepare for the RMAC Tournament, which gets underway Tuesday, April 20 with quarterfinal action.

"I think we have a very good team. I think with us, it comes down to whether we're scoring to score that day or not," Oberholtzer said. "I haven't been too concerned with conceding goals because our back line and our goalkeepers have been doing great. It's just a matter if we can find the back of the net and we'll get to find that out in about a week's time."

Notes:
The FLC men's soccer team honored its two graduating seniors Sunday in defenseman Devon Baird and forward Ryan Lee. Baird graduated last fall. As for Lee, a Second Team All-RMAC player in 2019, he was unable to play Sunday due to an injury but is expected to rejoin the team and graduate this spring.

"It was great to be able to recognize Devon and Ryan. Devon graduated last fall, but it was great to have him come back and be able to acknowledge him after not having a season in the fall," Oberholtzer said. "Ryan and Devon have been four year guys for us and really instrumental in developing the culture of our program. We're happy for them, but sad to see them go because they were impactful pieces of our program."
