Skyhawks fall 19-6 on the road to No. 12 Regis

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team concluded a hectic weekend with a Sunday morning matchup against No. 12 ranked Regis, falling by a 19-6 final in a game held on the Rangers' practice field after snow fall earlier in the week led to a venue change.

The two teams were nearly forced to play Sunday's game down in Colorado Springs at the UCCS campus until the decision was made Saturday evening the game could be played in Denver after snow removal.

"The whole weekend was just crazy. I felt, as a coach, almost unprepared because I didn't know if we were playing, what time we'd be playing or where we'd be playing," said FLC head women's lacrosse coach, Ashley Travis. "That was tough all weekend with the snow for both games, UCCS and Regis. It was just a crazy and unpredictable weekend."

Regis (8-1 overall, 4-0 RMAC), winners of eight straight and tied atop the RMAC standings, flexed its muscle early, scoring the game's first six goals. The Rangers finished with a 34-12 advantage in shots and 27-10 lead in shots on goal.

"I think it was really good for the girls to see a top, nationally ranked team and see what we can get better at when we play tough teams like that," Travis said. "I think we can take away a lot of things from this game after seeing how Regis plays. We need to be more aggressive and move the ball faster. When you do that, you score a lot of goals."

Five different Skyhawks (2-5 overall, 1-4 RMAC) scored goals on Sunday, led by senior Abby Escandon with two on a team-high four shots on goal. Escandon leads FLC in goals scored (18) and total points (21) so far this spring.

Fellow senior Ann Nelson, sophomores Liv Crawford and Makena Carter, and junior midfielder Maren Clark each netted one goal apiece to pace the FLC offense.

The Skyhawks put 10 of their 12 shots on goal Sunday, scoring on 50% of their shot attempts. But transitioning from the defensive end to offense was a challenge against a fast and physical Rangers team as FLC finished 8-for-15 on clear attempts while Regis tallied 14 caused turnovers.

"Regis just swarmed us on clears and were able to get those caused turnovers in the midfield," Travis said. "They're a fast team with really high lacrosse IQ."

Sophomore goalkeeper Averi Basso made eight saves and junior JoJo Lutz scooped a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers to anchor the defense.

"I thought Averi played a stellar game once again and had more saves than what she was counted for and saved a lot of shots that were great shots from Regis," Travis said. "I thought JoJo played well (Sunday) and knocked down a lot of passes that could have resulted in some pretty automatic goals."

Fort Lewis will look to build off the positives from Sunday as it gets ready for a crucial four-game stretch to end the regular season. Three of the four remaining regular season games will be played at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango, starting at 1 p.m. next Friday against Westminster College.

In addition to the matchup against Westminster, the Skyhawks are also scheduled to face CSU Pueblo on Friday, April 30 as the three teams battle it out for the fourth and final playoff spot in the RMAC Tournament.

"It's going to come down to the wire. These last four games are going to be a big predicter of which team goes to the RMAC," Travis said. "I definitely think we've competed well with all the teams we have left on the schedule. We need to be on our game and win these games. We just need to play tough and compete."
