Skyhawks earn 24-1 rout of Adams State on Senior Day

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team closed the regular season in style, rolling to a 24-1 home victory over Adams State University on Senior Day, putting the team in prime position to advance to its first RMAC Tournament since 2018.

Fort Lewis (5-6 overall, 4-5 RMAC) was sitting in the fourth and final RMAC Tournament playoff spot entering the weekend, based on RPI rankings put out by the conference. With a win over Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday, coupled with Saturday's rout of the Grizzlies (0-9 overall, 0-9 RMAC), FLC ended the season with wins in three of its last four to strengthen its RPI rating.

"Ending the regular season the way we did, it was a great way to send off our seniors and a great way to show our young team we can accomplish the goals we've set for ourselves," said FLC head women's lacrosse coach, Ashley Travis. "Playing in these crucial, must-win type games really taught our team a lot of lessons and things going forward."

The Skyhawks had 11 different players score on Saturday, outshooting the Grizzlies, 42-4, and dominating draw controls (21-5), groundballs (24-15) and the turnover battle (21-9).

Senior attacker Abby Escandon led all scorers with four goals and two assists, giving her a team-high and career-high 30 goals in 11 games played this season.

Freshman attacker Caprietta Abbadessa matched Escandon with four goals, while the trio of senior Ann Nelson, Kaylin Vanzant and sophomore Makena Carter all added three goals apiece to highlight the Skyhawks' offensive onslaught.

Abbadessa, Carter and Vanzant all set career-highs for goals scored in a game.

"We wanted to go out there and have fun, get some people some time in positions they haven't played much and have a lot of goal scorers," Travis said. "Getting Capri a little more confidence on the attacking side and Kaylin some shots on goal was great to see. It was good for them to see some shots go in heading into the playoffs and next season."

The lopsided scoreboard also allowed the Skyhawks to bring up some defensive players on the attacking side, leading to the first career-goals for juniors JoJo Lutz and Jillian Byron.

"We were all happy for JoJo and Jillian scoring their first college goals," Travis said. "After JoJo had her first shot saved, we were telling her, 'You gotta get one.' The whole team was happy for her and for a lot of our players to score some goals (Saturday). I think it shows our team camaraderie and how we have players cheering on their teammates."

Freshman attacker Alyssa Strough added two goals, while fellow freshman Haley Dostie and sophomore Liv Crawford each scored a goal to round out the Skyhawks' scoring.

In net, sophomore Averi Basso stopped two of the season-low three shots she faced.

Travis said Saturday's dominating victory, and the likely possibility of the playoff berth in the RMAC Tournament next weekend, was the perfect send-off for Escandon and Nelson as the senior duo have been instrumental in the program's growth since Travis arrived in 2019.

"Last time that Abby and Ann made the RMAC Tournament they were freshmen and the tournament was taking six teams. To be the No. 4 seed when we were preseason ranked No. 6, it's a great accomplishment for them," Travis said. "Ann and Abby have been awesome my two years here and have shown so much leadership, being strong women in general and pushing this team in things a young team might not be confident in doing. They've been great role models for our team and I'm excited to see what they do next in their lives, with Ann going on to a nursing program and Abby starting her own coaching career."

If the Skyhawks do indeed lock up the No. 4 seed in the RMAC Tournament, they will have a rematch against No. 10 ranked Regis University (13-1 overall, 9-0 RMAC). FLC fell 19-6 in the first matchup between the two teams on April 18.

"Regis is a great team and I think this week we did a lot of the little things right. We want to build off that and even do a little better moving forward if we are in the RMAC Tournament," Travis said. "The last time we saw Regis, we played them and UCCS in the same weekend and that's a tough test. I think we'll have a little better game plan going into that matchup if we see them."
