Bosanko nets first career goal, Skyhawks roll to 2-0 victory over Adams State

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team needed a palate cleanser; a get-right performance after a challenging road trip last weekend.

Proud owners of a .754 win percentage (192-56-20) all-time on their home pitch, the Skyhawks were able to do just that as they rolled to a 2-0 victory over Adams State University on Friday inside the friendly confines of Dirks Field.

"This was a good opportunity for us to rebound and I thought the guys played really well," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "We stuck to our plan, collectively, for the full 90 minutes and put together a consistent, complete performance. I think we were just a little unlucky to not have connected on a few more goals because we certainly created a lot of good opportunities."

Fort Lewis (2-2-1 overall) tallied 15 total shots and its eight shots on goal tied an early season high as the midfield and attack applied relentless pressure on ASU (0-4-0 overall) back row.

Senior forward Brantley Bice led all players with three shots on goal and netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 40th minute, settling a loose ball off a corner kick attempt and burying a shot to the bottom-left past Grizzlies goalkeeper, Logan Rabasca.

"I think that's just an example of who Brantley is. He's a level-headed guy," Oberholtzer said. "Being able to pick the ball out of the air and get it on target, being under pressure and dealing with a lot of traffic in front of him, it was a great goal."

The Skyhawks added an insurance goal in the 55th minute when sophomore midfielder Aymaro Vargas cycled a pass back up top to true freshman Quinn Bosanko, who promptly fired a dart from 35-yards out that skipped in low to bump the FLC lead to 2-0.

It was the first goal of Bosanko's young career and a promising sign for a Salida product that has quickly assimilated himself into FLC's starting midfield.

"It was a great goal and anytime you're scoring from that kind of distance, it's special," Oberholtzer said. "He's been really consistent since Day One when he stepped on the field for us. He's done a very good job for us and getting that first goal was just icing on the cake."

Friday's performance also marked the first shutout of the fall for the FLC defensive unit, which allowed just three total shots — only one on goal — as it bottled up the Grizzlies' attack.

Senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne stopped the lone shot he faced to record the 18th shutout in his career; tying him for the fourth most in program history with current FLC goalkeepers coach and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Ryan Wirth.

"Any time you go out, your goal is to post a shutout. And obviously the shutout was great, but to limit (ASU) to just one shot on goal for the whole 90 was good to see," Oberholtzer said. "I was super happy with our defensive effort."

The Skyhawks will look to rest up and build off Friday's win as they prepare to wrap up the non-conference portions of their schedule next weekend against rivals Colorado Mesa (Sept. 24) and Westminster College (Sept. 26).

"Hopefully the win gives the guys some confidence and good momentum heading into next week because we have two more tough games coming up," Oberholtzer said. "But we're still focused on getting better every day. That's a big thing for us; not getting comfortable and still looking to grow."
