Volleyball Drops Final Matches of the Weekend; Looks Ahead to RMAC Season

CANYON, Texas – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team fell in both matches on the final day of the Britkare Lady Buff Classic on Saturday, dropping straight-set matches to Texas Permian Basin and St. Edwards University. The matches marked the final nonconference contest for the Skyhawks, and the team will now look ahead to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action.

"This was a challenging road trip heading into the conference season, but the result didn't account for the growth that we had as a team this weekend," said head volleyball coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "These matches taught us to be resilient and test ourselves when our backs are against the walls. We became united, worked on reading our opponents, and translated that into improvements on the court."

Game One: Texas Permian Basin 3, Fort Lewis 0
Texas Permian Basin hit at a .228 mark for the match while holding Fort Lewis to .160. Defense was a bright spot for the Skyhawks as the team picked up 57 digs to the opposition's 52. Senior Madi Nash paced the team with 10 kills to go along with 13 digs. Senior Avynn La Rose was the team's most efficient outlet, hitting .353 with eight kills. Defensively, senior Makena Ahuna and junior Kamryn Lopez each collected 13 digs.

Set One (14-25)
The Falcons took advantage of a 10-1 run, going up 12-3 before a kill from Nash allowed for a side out. Points were traded on both sides with FLC picking up kills from junior Payton Harmann and Nash to bring things to 15-7. The Skyhawks continued to battle, keeping Permian Basin from going on lengthy runs, but the damage was too much to overcome with the set going to the Falcons, 25-14.

Set Two (23-25)
The Skyhawks had a competitive start to the second set, battling back from an early deficit with a 7-0 run to claim an 11-8 edge. The run was highlighted by kills from freshman Alexis Hobie and Nash.  The momentum quickly shifted as the Falcons enjoyed a run of their own to go up 14-13. The streaks continued with both sides earning four in a row to knot things up at 19-19. The late points of the set saw scrappy play on both sides, but Permian Basin prevailed with a 25-23 win to go up a pair.

Set Three (22-25)
The slow starts carried over into set three with the Skyhawks quickly falling behind 11-3. Nash responded with three straight points to put her team back within reach. Unfortunately, the streaky play continued to plague FLC with Permian Basin going ahead 18-8. The Skyhawks didn't go down quietly, though, rattling off points to bring things to 22-20. A block from freshman Natalia Lambos and sophomore Nya Sciacca had FLC down 23-22, but a costly service error was followed by an ace to close out the match.

Game Two: St. Edwards University 3, Fort Lewis 0
Fort Lewis was limited to a .071 hitting percentage while St. Edwards hit at a .182 clip. Defense was evenly matched throughout with both sides earning six blocks and St. Edwards holding a slight 53-47 edge in digs. Madi Nash led the team with eight kills while picking up 10 digs. Avynn La Rose followed with five kills. Makena Ahuna dished out 18 assists to go along with seven digs.

Set One: 16-25
The Skyhawks fell behind early but battled back to knot things at 5-5 thanks to a La Rose kill. FLC would trail closely behind, seeing the score at 15-12 after a kill from junior Joviana Romero, but a scoring run moved the score to 19-12 in favor of the Hilltoppers. FLC ran out of steam down the stretch as St. Edwards earned a 25-16 win in the opener.

Set Two: 16-25
Roles were reversed early in set two with FLC taking an early lead. Things started to drop back into similar trends with a scoring run giving the Hilltoppers a 6-4 edge. The Skyhawks remained within striking distance throughout the middle part of the set before a late run had St. Edwards at set point. A kill from Nash held off the end of the set, but an eventual kill ended things at 25-16.

Set Three: 23-25
A kill from senior Cameron Callahan had the score sitting at 7-7 before a pair of points had FLC trailing.  The Skyhawks used errors and a pair of kills to their advantage to take an 11-9 advantage, but a quick six-point burst saw St. Edwards up 15-11. The Skyhawks remained competitive, tying the score at 21, 22, and 23 before a kill and an FLC error ended things in 25-23 fashion.
