Skyhawks Fall to Mountain Lions on the Road, 15-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team ended the regular season road portion of its schedule on Sunday with a 15-9 loss to UCCS despite a four-goal outing from Ellie Martinez.

Fort Lewis falls to 4-11 overall and 4-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while UCCS improves to 10-5 on the year and 7-3 in league play.

UCCS had a 42-27 edge in shots for the game while committing 13 turnovers versus 12 for Fort Lewis. Averi Basso collect 16 saves between the pipes which is her second-best mark all season. Martinez led the team with four goals, followed by five players that had one apiece. Rebecca Kiyokawa was the only other player to pick up more than one point, adding one goal and one assist to her stat line. Basso and Kiyokawa led the way with four and three groundballs apiece. Autumn Rymerson was impressive on draw controls, winning six on the day.

UCCS got on the board first, but it took a while to get there with the game's first point coming with 6:33 remaining on the clock. The Mountain Lions doubled the lead moments later when a caused turnover led to favorable field position and an assisted goal. Fort Lewis took advantage of an opposing foul with time ticking below two minutes, converting a clear for Martinez's first goal of the day with 1:32 to go. She would add her second with 19 seconds to go to knot the game, but UCCS picked up a late goal to lead 3-2 after one quarter.

The Skyhawks sent the first shot of the second quarter on goal, but a save and groundball pickup sent the home team downfield. Basso saved the first shot sent her way, but persistence paid off as the second shot found the back of the net for a 4-2 lead. UCCS went on to score two unanswered goals before a shot by Haley Dostie resulted in a 6-3 score with six minutes to play. The goal was Dostie's team-high 28th of the season. The Mountain Lions reclaimed an 8-3 advantage before another Martizen goal held the score at 8-4 after two-quarters of play.

Mikki Brown and Maren Clark took advantage of a man-up and free position opportunity in the beginning of the third quarter to narrow the deficit to 9-6 with 6:06 to go. UCCS continued to be efficient on groundball efforts, running away with a pair that resulted in goals to extend the lead to 12-6 with one quarter to play.

Fort Lewis earned goals from Alyssa Strough and Kiyokawa through the midway point of the fourth quarter to see the score at 13-8 in favor of the Mountain Lions. A pair of fouls allowed UCCS to add another goal with two minutes remaining, but the Skyhawks got the last punch of the afternoon with a final-minute goal from Martinez to close it out in a 15-9 score.

Fort Lewis (4-11, 4-7 RMAC) will return home for its final game of the regular season on Saturday. The team takes on CSU Pueblo for a 3:00 p.m. start from Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
