Skyhawks football to play at South Dakota Mines on Saturday

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team (0-7, 0-5 RMAC) will make its longest trip of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule this week as the Skyhawks challenge the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines (3-4, 2-3 RMAC) at O'Harra Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
Colorado Mesa University (3-4, 2-3 RMAC) ran off with the Skyhawks' homecoming game last weekend as the Mavericks dished out 521 yards of offense, 203 yards of which came off the arm of Gavin Herberg who threw for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another. In addition to Herberg, five other Mavs rushed for a score in the contest. Braden Wingle did all he could from the pocket throwing for a career-high 298 yards and two touchdowns on 26 completions in 43 attempts (60.5%). Christopher Thomas Jr. and Calvin Raab each hauled in a receiving touchdown.
 
Key Figures
With nearly 300 yards last Saturday, Wingle brought his career total to 2,915 and now ranks 11th in all-time career passing yards at Fort Lewis. Across the conference, Wingle ranks third in completion percentage (64.4%), and fifth in total yards (1,430), efficiency (132.9), and yards per game (204.3). Zachary Gaumont continues to lead the league in yards per catch with an average of 38.1 while Peyton Monson has stood as the RMAC's leading returner all season with 443 total kick return yards, 174 more than the next closest returner.
 
Scouting the Hardrockers
South Dakota Mines, although standing 3-4 overall this season, has a plethora of national talents. The Hardrockers' offensive line has allowed only six sacks this season to lead the RMAC and rank 12th in Division II. Ben Noland, a junior wideout from Jefferson, Ga., has torched defensive backs this season with 693 receiving yards and eight touchdowns while ranking second in Division II with 61 receptions. In addition, redshirt junior quarterback Jayden Johannsen has been lethal in the pocket. Johannsen leads the league with 164 completions in 242 attempts (67.8%) for the conference's second-best 1,707 yards.
 
Looking Ahead
Next week Fort Lewis is back at home for its Pink Game and Academic Faculty and Staff Day presented by Centura, The Wells Group, and Alpine Bank. The Skyhawks take on a South Dakota foe for the second-straight week, welcoming Black Hills State University (4-3, 3-2 RMAC) for a 12:00 p.m. kickoff on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
