Records fall and personal bests are established in outdoor track opener in Pueblo

3/19/2023 3:15:00 PM

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's and women's outdoor track teams opened the 2023 season on Saturday at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invite, racking up 28 personal bests and breaking a pair of program records to highlight the day.

Men's Results
The men's team saw athletes competing in the 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10000m alongside athletes from a handful of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents. The top moment of the afternoon came in the 5k where freshman Bean Minor claimed the title behind a school-record time of 14:36.56 (converted from 14:59.51).

The Skyhawks had three place top-10 in the 800m, paced by sophomore Brady Burrough's third place time of 1:54.61. Junior Aaron Busche (1:55.38) and sophomore Conner Dosmann (1:57.24) followed in fourth and sixth, respectively. Ricardo Trejo was a top-10 finisher in the 10k with a time of 31:54.11 to lead all Skyhawks.

"This was a fantastic season opener for the men.  They have bought into the new training program, and it really showed today.  We talked about putting ourselves in position to run a great race early and they did exactly that.  In workouts we have been focusing on working together and the 5k today was a perfect example of that. The men broke away early and finished 1-2-3 and all in a PR time. To see Bean Minor break a school record in his first track 5K was absolutely incredible. It's exciting to see the men open up so well and I look forward to seeing the progress of this team as the season goes on."

The Skyhawks saw top-10 finishes from seven additional athletes in the 800m, 5000m, and 10000m races. Senior Angel Curley kicked off her season with a ninth place finish in the 800m at 2:24.63. Senior Taylor Murphy led the effort in the 5k, placing seventh with a time of 19:03.47. The 10k Skyhawks were led by senior Esther Beck who turned in a fourth place finish at 38:30.45. Junior Brandy Ray (38:38.74) followed in fifth while senior Carmella Wright (38:41.03) finished in sixth.

"These women have been through a very hard training block this winter, and today all their hard work paid off.  Katie continued her recorded breaking year this time taking down the 1500m record.  The women in the 10k and 5k all set PR's and did an amazing job working together and pushing each other to those.  They came off a great cross country season and came into the off season ready to put in the work and today it showed. This was a great way to start off the outdoor season, and I am excited to see where they go from here as we get into more specific work."
