Skyhawks drop Saturday slate to No. 12 Mavericks

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team held on but ultimately fell to No. 12 Colorado Mesa University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference weekend finale. The Skyhawks dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Mavericks improved to 10-0, 2-0 RMAC.

"I don't think that the final score reflected how hard we competed tonight," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We gave a ranked team a lot of trouble and they had to really earn their victory. As a team, we made a lot of progress, and we will continue to build."

Fort Lewis recorded 32 kills on the night compared to 38 for Colorado Mesa. The Skyhawks held the edge at the service line with five aces versus three for the Mavericks.

Sophomore Ella Butler led the team with seven kills, followed by seniors JJ Curry and Lauren Shea who each had six. Freshman Jordan DeJesus played in the final set and had five kills on 10 swings. Junior Sarah Wilkey led the way with 11 digs, followed by freshman Alina Nunez who contributed nine. Junior Natalia Lambos recorded 28 assists and four block assists.

In the first set, the teams were competitive and traded points before Colorado Mesa went on a 6-0 scoring run for a 16-8 advantage. The Skyhawks answered back with a run of their own, fueled by the block and an ace by Wilkey to make it 16-14. Fort Lewis enjoyed another run moments later off of service pressure by Shea to take an 18-17 lead. The teams would tie at 20-all, but the Mavericks closed it out on a five-point surge to claim a 25-20 set.

Set two was close early, but Fort Lewis saw a three-point edge at 9-6 thanks to an attacking error. Colorado Mesa came back to tie things up at 10 apiece and eventually reclaimed the lead at 13-11 with a kill out of the middle. The ensuing points saw numerous lead changes and tied scores, including a 24-24 deadlock with a Butler kill. The Mavericks managed to score the following two points to claim a 26-24 second set.

The Mavericks cruised to a 10-4 lead in the third set before a service error gave the Skyhawks a side out. Fort Lewis capitalized and began chipping away, eventually tying the score at 15-15 thanks to a kill by DeJesus. The teams went on the tie at 16, 17, and 18 before the Mavericks earned a two-point advantage on an attacking error. The lead remained, and the visitors closed out the set with a trio of kills to claim the match.
