Football set for Route 160 rivalry matchup under the lights in Alamosa

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College football team (0-3, 0-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) is preparing to head east down Route 160 for a showdown under the lights of Rex Field at Adams State University (1-2, 0-1 RMAC) as the Skyhawks and Grizzlies meet for the 61st time at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 23.
 
Last Time Out
Fort Lewis is back on the road after its season and conference opener against New Mexico Highlands University (2-1, 1-0 RMAC) last Saturday. The Skyhawks, for the third-straight game and the first time since 2016, rolled out 343 yards of total offense in the contest to produce two rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys, however, showed out on the ground for 210 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Fort Lewis was able to pull within a touchdown on two occasions, however, Highlands departed as the victors with a 31-17 score.
 
Key Figures
Senior Braden Wingle has thrown for 617 yards this season and completed 52 of his 89 passing attempts (58.4%) for a trio of touchdowns and two interceptions. Wingle is averaging 205.7 yards per game and currently ranks fifth in the RMAC in total offense. Fort Lewis' offense ranks fourth in the conference in yards of total offense per game with 332.3. Additionally, FLC boasts the second-ranked fourth-down defense in the league allowing foes to convert just 20.0% of the time. Peyton Monson also leads the RMAC in several kick return categories including attempts (seven), yards (215), and average return (30.7 yards).
 
Series vs. Adams State
Saturday's contest in Alamosa marks the 61st meeting all-time between the two programs and the 33rd on the campus of ASU. The Grizzlies own the overall series 41-18-1 as well as a 25-7 record at home and currently sit on a two-game winning streak. Fort Lewis' last win came by a 28-9 final score in Durango back on Oct. 5, 2019.
 
Scouting the Grizzlies
Adams State opened its 2023 campaign with a commanding 35-16 win over Lincoln University (0-4) and has since dropped back-to-back games to West Texas A&M University (2-1, 1-0 LSC) and second-ranked Colorado School of Mines (3-0, 1-0 RMAC).
 
True freshman Connor Underhill has led the Grizzlies' offense to averaging 248.7 yards per game: 103.3 rushing and 145.4 passing. Underhill boasts a 103.21 quarterback rating with a 43.8% completing percentage (21-for-48) for 285 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Daylen Boddie is the lead back for ASU and the only one to rush for over 100 yards (160) with a pair of scores on the season. Rasheed Rankin has supplied another two rushing scores on 74 yards while Kentrell Petite (2) and Aaron Johnson (1) have each hauled in receiving touchdowns. Adams State's defense, led by Daniel Mendoza with 36 total tackles, ranks ninth in the RMAC allowing opponents an average of 445.3 yards per game.
 
Looking Ahead
Next Saturday, Sep. 30, Fort Lewis will be back at home on Ray Dennison Memorial Field to welcome the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves for a noon kickoff. The Skyhawks will be celebrating Youth and Community Football Day, presented by the Bank of Colorado and Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
