Volleyball earns split on day two of Skyhawks Invitational

DURANGO, Colo. -- The Fort Lewis College volleyball team played late into the night on Friday, earning a win over East Central University to wrap up day two of the Skyhawks Invitational. The Skyhawks started the day with a hard fought four-set loss to (RV) Angelo State University.

Match One: (RV) Angelo State 3, Fort Lewis 1 (25-20, 16-25, 25-22, 25-20)
Angelo State outhit Fort Lewis .192 to .176 for the match. The additional statistical categories, the teams were nearly even. Freshman Alina Nunez led the team with a career-high 11 kills to go along with eight digs. Senior JJ Curry followed with 10 kills and nine digs. Senior Lauren Shea followed with nine kills while freshman Jordyn Romano matched that total with a .500 efficiency. Junior Natalia Lambos tallied 42 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Junior Sarah Wilkey came away with 18 digs to lead the team. Freshman Logan Spragg, Nunez, and Curry each recorded two aces. Spragg led the team with a career-best five blocks.

Match Two: Fort Lewis 3, East Central 1 (25-19, 25-14, 20-25, 25-15)
The Skyhawks hit a season-high .278 in the nightcap with a pair of sets seeing efficiency totals over .400. The team racked up seven aces, 50 digs, and 59 kills in the effort. Curry led the team with 16 kills, followed by Romano who picked up a career-high with 15 kills on 25 swings. Nunez recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Lambos earned a career-high with 51 assists (12.75/set) to go along with three kills. Wilkey had double-digit digs for the seventh-straight match, adding 14 to her season total. Nunez, Wilkey, and Curry combined for six aces for the match.

"I was impressed with how our team battled today. We were relentless on defense, tough with our serves, and put a lot of pressure on our opponents with our offense. I am particularly happy with how our freshmen players competed. Watching our young talent compete like seasoned veterans is very exciting. We are hosting some tough opponents at this tournament, and we are looking forward to finishing our battle strong."
