Stafford and Salas send women's soccer to RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal

DURANGO, Colo. – The sophomore sensations, Haley Stafford and Ashlyn Salas, combined for three goals to advance the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to the next round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament where they will face No. 18 Colorado Mesa University.

The 3-0 win over Regis University improved Fort Lewis to 9-5-4 overall while Regis' season came to an end at 6-11-3. The Skyhawks have matched their win total from last season where they went 9-4-6.

The Rangers came away with 19 shots compared to 10 for the Skyhawks. Seven of Regis' shots made their way on goal while six were on frame for Fort Lewis. Regis had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks, but the Skyhawks defense was stingy in those attempts. The teams combined for 18 fouls.

Stafford started the scoring with her third goal of the year, followed by two goals from Salas to bring her total to a team-best six on the season. Senior Sabrina Reyes and junior Abigail Nkrumah each recorded an assist. Once again, multiple players stayed on for the entire match, including the defensive unit of sophomore Rachel Peebles, senior Danielle Gonzales, and fifth-year McKenna Ford. Fifth-year goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for their seventh shutout of the season.

Regis took the first shot of the match in the 11th minute, but the Skyhawks made the most of their first chance thanks to a goal by Stafford. The sophomore found the ball inside the box after service from Reyes and beat her defenders for a missile of a shot that found the top-left pocket. The Rangers had the next shot on goal, but the Skyhawks' backline managed to head it out to hold the score.

The teams traded chances throughout the first half, and it appeared the match would head to halftime in a 1-0 score. Salas had other ideas, though, and doubled the lead with three minutes on the clock. The sophomore collected a pass from Nkrumah and took it to the end line. She appeared to have run out of space, but an improbable shot across the goal snuck in just inside the post for a 2-0 lead.

The second half saw the Skyhawks with another prime chance early, and this time it was Gonzales with the ball. The senior defender lined up for a deep free kick and had near pin-point accuracy, but the ball clipped the crossbar. Freshman Amber Otts collected the deflection and sent a shot on goal, but the opposing keeper made the save. Rosenbaum followed with saves that were just 40 seconds apart to preserve the shutout.

Salas would put the game out of reach in the 62nd minute with her second goal of the match. She found space on a deflected pass and placed her shot out of the keeper's reach for the sixth goal of her sophomore campaign. The Rangers added on shots late in the match, but the Fort Lewis defense did well to ensure they were off target, and the horn ultimately sounded on a resounding home win.

Fort Lewis (9-5-4) advances to face No. 18 Colorado Mesa University on Monday in Grand Junction. It will be an RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal meeting between the No. 7 and No. 2 seeds and is set to kickoff at 5:00 PM from Community Hospital Unity Field.
