Football to meet No. 11/11 ThunderWolves in Pueblo on Saturday

DURANGO, Colo. – Fort Lewis football (1-4, 0-3 RMAC) will match up with its second top 15 opponent in as many weeks on Saturday afternoon, as the Skyhawks head into the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl to challenge the Thunderwolves from No. 11/11-ranked Colorado State University-Pueblo (5-1, 4-0 RMAC) in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game at 2 pm.
 
Facing the Favorites
Fort Lewis is running through its toughest stretch of its 2025 campaign, taking on both No. 5/6-ranked Western Colorado University (5-0, 3-0 RMAC) and CSU Pueblo in back-to-back weeks. Both schools shared the top spot on the league's preseason coaches' poll with 76 points each, both receiving an identical five first-place votes, three second-place votes, and one third-place vote.  In addition, both programs have been frequent flyers on the American Football Coaches Association and D2Football.com top 25 polls, appearing on consecutive polls throughout the past two seasons.
 
Takeaways from Western Colorado
Last weekend, the Skyhawks suffered a 49-10 loss at the hands of the postseason-seeking Mountaineers. Despite putting up 210 yards of total offense, the Fort Lewis defense also limited the top-ranked Western Colorado offense to only 375 yards of total offense, three yards shy of its season-low (373 yards) in production. In addition, Aaron Francis and Michael Delap each caused havoc in the backfield, recording a pair of solo strip-sacks on the WCU quarterback. While the Mountaineers recovered both fumbles, Wesley Wright managed to force a takeaway himself, making a stellar tip-toe interception down the home sideline, the first of his career. FLC also broke up six passes and forced five quarterback hurries.
 
Tag-Team Under Center
Fort Lewis has gone with a split look under center in recent weeks, utilizing the skills of both redshirt sophomore Jacob Morris and redshirt freshman Jake Jones. Jones has provided a new threat on the ground, rushing for a team-high 161 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries (6.4 yards per attempt). Meanwhile, in the pocket, Morris has completed 47 passes in 84 attempts (56 percent) for 579 yards (12.3 yards per catch) and four touchdowns against two interceptions.

Series with CSU Pueblo
Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo have met 37 times since 1963, with the ThunderWolves leading the all-time series 30-7, including 17-2 in Pueblo, Colo., and 18-6 in conference games. The Skyhawks last win over The Pack came by way of a 35-24 decision in Durango, Colo., back on Oct. 14, 2017, but its last win over CSUP in Pueblo, Colo., was back on Sept. 29, 1984, by a score of 38-10.
 
Lone Blemish
CSU Pueblo has outscored its opponents this season by a total margin of 252-104. However, the ThunderWolves were felled at home nonetheless, by the currently No. RV/20-ranked Fort Hays State University (4-2, 3-1 MIAA) 36-35 on a blocked extra-point back on Sept. 4. The loss marked The Pack's second in non-conference play in as many seasons. Looking back at 2024, when CSUP lost at home, 24-21, to No. 3/4-ranked Grand Valley State (11-2, 6-1 GLIAC), the ThunderWolves went on to win the RMAC outright at a perfect 9-0 in conference play before falling in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs.

Looking Ahead
Fort Lewis will return to the natural grass of Ray Dennison Memorial Field next Saturday, Oct. 18, as the Skyhawks welcome Chadron State College (4-2, 4-0 RMAC) for Homecoming Weekend, presented by Durango Motor Company and Bank of the San Juans, in Durango. Kickoff against the Eagles is slated for 12 pm.
