Road games to wrap up women's basketball's season

DURANGO, Colo. – Women's basketball will end its season on the road this week with games against Chadron State College and South Dakota Mines and hopes to snap a six-game losing streak.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks lost two games at home last week, first against CSU Pueblo (66-61) on Thursday. Fort Lewis shot 33.3 percent (22-of-66) from the field compared to a 38.3 percent (23-of-60) clip for the Pack. The teams were even with a 29.2 percent mark from three with seven makes. Rebounds were close as well with CSU Pueblo coming away with 44 versus 43 for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks committed 21 turnovers versus 17 for the Pack.

Junior Deniece Ryan led the team with 19 points, followed by senior Livia Knapp with nine. Senior Darla Hernandez added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Katie Lamb ranked second on the team with six rebounds and two steals. CSU Pueblo was led by Alisha Little who had 30 points and 16 rebounds.

They wrapped up their home schedule on Saturday with a loss to Colorado Christian University (71-56).Fort Lewis shot just 35.6 percent from the field compared to a 42.2 percent mark for Colorado Christian. Both teams made eight threes and combined for just 15 free throws. Colorado Christian outrebounded Fort Lewis 42-32 and took advantage of 14 turnovers. The Cougars earned 36 points in the paint versus 18 for the Skyhawks.

Senior Eva Kingston led the team with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Senior Darla Hernandez followed with 10 points while leading the team with nine rebounds. Junior Deniece was the final player to reach double figures with 10 points.

Scouting Chadron State
The Eagles are 5-19 overall and 4-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They have lost three straight games, including losses to Mines (77-55) and Westminster (69-66) last week. Chadron State has struggled mightily on the road with a 1-10 away record while owning a 4-8 mark at home.

Chadron State averages 64.3 points per game while slashing .384/.293/.775. The Eagles are narrowly outrebounding their opponents by averaging 37.7 per game (+.2). Turnovers have been an issue throughout the year, leading to a league-leading 18.6 turnovers per game mark.

Ashayla Powers leads the team with 11.1 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Kylie Krise follows with 10 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game. Kyra Tanabe has dished out 70 assists to go along with 19 steals and nine points per game.

Thursday's game will be the first meeting between the teams this season. When they faced last year, Fort Lewis came away with a 71-58 home win.

Inside the Numbers
In the RMAC standings, the Skyhawks rank 12th in points per game (63.5) while sitting 10th in points allowed per game (68.3). The squad ranks 5th in free throw percentage (73.9) but is 13th in total attempted free throws (322). They are 7th in field goal percentage (.397) and 6th in three-point field goal percentage (.303). Rebounding remains an area to key in on, and Fort Lewis continues to rank 13th (34.0) in boards per game. They are 13th in turnovers per game (17.2) and 5th in steals per game (8.85).

Darla Hernandez ranks 9th in rebounds per game with 7.3. Katie Lamb leads the conference in three-point shooting with a clip of 36.3 and is 5th in the rankings with 2.0 made threes per game. Lamb also ranks 15th in steals per game (1.6), followed by Livia Knapp (22nd, 1.4).

Scouting South Dakota Mines
The Hardrockers head into their Thursday matchup against New Mexico Highlands with a record of 6-19 and a 6-12 mark in RMAC play. They are 3-8 inside the King Center in Rapid City.

South Dakota Mines averages 58.1 points per game compared to 69.2 for their opponents. The Hardrockers slash .359/.289/.727 to go along with 37.3 rebounds per game (+2.0). They dish out 12.7 assists per game and commit 16.4 turnovers per game.

Three players average double-digit points per game, led by Savea Mansfield at 13.3 points per game. Morning Grace Spotted Bear follows with 12.8 per game and Piper Bauer puts away 10.6 per game. Spotted Bear leads the team and ranks seventh in the conference with 8.4 rebounds per game. Spotted Bear stat line carries into assists (58), steals (46), and blocks (20) where she leads the team.   

Fort Lewis lost to South Dakota Mines at home in January by an 88-74 final. Spotted Bear put up 32 points and 13 rebounds in the late comeback. The Skyhawks had four players reach double-figures, led by Deniece Ryan at 18 points.
