Women's lacrosse closes season on Senior Day

DURANGO, Colo. – The season came to an end for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team on a brisk afternoon at Ray Dennison Memorial Field, with Westminster University claiming a 14-4 win in the finale.

Fort Lewis ended the season at 1-15 overall and 0-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play while Westminster advances to the RMAC Tournament at 7-8, 4-6 RMAC.

The Griffins outshot the Skyhawks 35-23 with a 28-15 advantage in shots on goal. The teams combined for 74 turnovers, 41 of which went against Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks compiled 33 ground balls, 11 draws, and went 20-of-28 on clears.

Senior Phoebe Ramirez led the Skyhawks in scoring with two goals, followed by junior Diamond Velasco and freshman Jasmine Nguyen with one each. Sophomore Piper Price and Nguyen both dished out an assist. Junior Samantha Rodgers came away with seven caused turnovers, five ground balls, and five draws. Junior Sydney Tannaci followed with five ground balls and three draws. Senior Caley Lay collected 14 saves in goal—her sixth double-digit save outing of the season.

The Skyhawks struck first with a goal in the third minute off the stick of Velasco, and the Griffins found the equalizer 10 minutes later to make it 1-1 with 2:52 to go. Turnovers plagued Fort Lewis in the final minutes of the first quarter to end it in a deadlock.

Westminster quickly grabbed a lead after just 12 seconds of the second quarter, followed by three saves from Lay to hold the score. The visitors capitalized on a Fort Lewis turnover to score their third goal and tacked on two more to force a timeout. The break in play led to a goal by Nguyen to make it 5-2 with five minutes on the clock. The freshman scored another late in the quarter for a 5-3 score at the half.

The Griffins found separation in the third quarter thanks to an early goal to make it 6-3. Ramirez snagged a goal after a turnover to make it a two-goal difference again, but Westminster ended the quarter on a 5-0 scoring run to carry an 11-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

The teams played scoreless in the fourth quarter with a plethora of fouls and cards keeping either side from establishing rhythm. The Griffins finally earned a woman-up goal at the 5:48 point, followed by another just 20 seconds later for a 14-4 lead. The Skyhawks sent two more shots toward goal late in the quarter, but the buzzer sounded on a 14-4 final.
