By Hayden Mangan, Assistant AD-Communications & Fan Engagement

DURANGO, Colo. – With 271 days to reflect on last year’s trip to the NCAA National Quarterfinal, only one question remains: What will the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team be capable of in 2025? A new assistant coach, new additions to the roster, and a new opportunity await as the Skyhawks embark on another journey in search of standing alone at the top.

Looking Back – NCAA National Quarterfinal

Fort Lewis put itself back on the map last fall, battling to a 14-4-6 overall record, a 7-2-1 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, and a trip back to the regional championship and NCAA National Quarterfinal. The Skyhawks finished as the runners-up in both the RMAC regular season and the RMAC tournament before handling No. 3-ranked UCCS, 4-2, in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Midwestern State, 2-0, in Wichita Falls, Texas, in the second and third rounds of the NCAA national tournament. The run ultimately came to an end with a narrow 1-0 loss on the road at No. 15-ranked CSU Pueblo.

The Skyhawks were one of the best defensive teams in the country in 2024, boasting the sixth-most shutouts (11) and 25th-lowest team goals-against average (0.991). Sophomore and Honorable Mention All-RMAC selection Lucas Martin stood between the posts and boasted the second-best save percentage (84.4%), made the fifth-most saves (92), and tied for the fourth-most shutouts (10) in Division II.

Junior David Citron had an incredible year on the offensive end for Fort Lewis, earning a plethora of all-conference and all-region honors, culminating in being named a College Sports Communicators First-Team Academic All-American and Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association Third-Team All-American.

In addition, seniors Tomas Duenes, Gabriel Legendre, Jakob Larson, and junior Casey Stracher earned nods to the D2CCA and USC All-South Central Region Teams. All six Skyhawks were tabbed with All-RMAC honors, while freshman Fabrizio Aguilera was named the RMAC Freshman of the Year, giving Fort Lewis the award in back-to-back seasons.

The Mountain Lions secured six first-place votes, two second-place votes, and two third-place votes. CSU Pueblo took the third-place spot with 80 points, followed by Regis in fourth with 79 points, and Colorado School of Mines in fifth with 57 points.

In conjunction with the preseason poll, the 13-student-athlete 2025 Preseason All-RMAC Team was also announced, featuring Fort Lewis' David Citron, Casey Stracher, and Lucas Martin. First Test - Lubbock Christian

Fort Lewis will face a familiar foe in Lubbock Christian tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. on Dirks Field, marking the third consecutive matchup between the two squads and fourth overall. The Skyhawks topped the Chaparrals 5-0 last season down in Lubbock, Texas, while the two teams hold a 1-1 series tie here in Durango. Lubbock Christian took the most recent match at home, 3-2, back on Aug. 31, 2023, after Fort Lewis won the first-ever meeting 3-1 back on Sept. 2, 2021.

This season, LCU was picked to finish sixth in the Lone Star Conference among the LSC's 11 teams in the leagues preseason poll. In addition, graduate goalkeeper Connor Pettigrew, senior midfielder Manu Nunez, and senior defender Geoffroy Letienne were each tabbed as preseason players to watch. Last season, Lubbock Christian captured a 6-6-5 overall record, a 3-4-3 mark in Lone Star play, and tied for sixth in conference play before ultimately surrendering the final spot in the LSC Conference Tournament to UT Tyler on tiebreaker rules thanks to a 2-2 tie with the Eagles in the regular season.

Guided by now fourth-year head coach Collin Cone, the Chaparrals averaged 1.24 goals per game on 10.5 shots per contest and a 50 percent shots-on-goal percentage. At the same time, LCU surrendered 1.53 goals per game on 12.9 shots and a 43.2 percent shots-on-goal percentage from its opponents. LCU also boasted 50 yellow cards compared to 20 from its opponents.

Lubbock Christian will be without its strongest offensive piece from last season following the departure of freshman phenom Justin Martinez. The 2024 All-LSC Third-Team, All-LSC Freshman Team, and United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection led the Chaparrals with six goals and two assists for 14 total points on the year. Letienne and senior forward Francisco Horta are the only returning multi-goal scorers for the team, with three goals and two goals each, respectively.

Pettigrew stood between the posts against Fort Lewis last season, surrendering the most goals against of the season for LCU. Across 2024 as a whole, Pettigrew was the only man in goal for the Chaparrals, carrying a 1.53 goals-against average and a 72.3 percent save percentage with 26 goals allowed and 68 saves made against 220 shots faced.
