No. 6 Skyhawks edge Chaparrals 2-1 on Guintini’s game-winner

Fort Lewis dominates second-half action

DURANGO, Colo. – A slow start and a penalty gave the visiting Chaparrals an early advantage, but the No. 6-ranked Skyhawks exploded in the second half, and Lorenz Guintini dealt the final blow with a game-winning header in the 89th minute to give Fort Lewis (1-0) a 2-1 edge over Lubbock Christian (0-1) in the 2025 season opener at home on Dirks Field.

Fort Lewis was sluggish out of the gate, firing off just six shots in the opening half without placing a single attempt on frame. Lubbock Christian took just four shots, its entirety of the match; however, a defensive miscue from the Skyhawks sent LCU to the penalty line in the 22nd minute. Pedro Lucas stepped to the line and buried his first career goal with the Chaparrals in the back-right corner.

After committing 10 fouls in the opening half, Fort Lewis settled into its attack across the final 45 minutes, committing just four fouls to Lubbock Christian's eight, while also taking three unanswered corner kicks. The Skyhawks held control of the ball for much of the final minutes, leading to over 60 minutes of possession while also keeping LCU from taking a single shot in the final half.

The long-awaited equalizer came in the 62nd minute, as Alessio Andreottola made a throw-in to Jacob Ramos, who, in quick response, supplied a give-and-go touch to Andreottola, who bested his defender and, with precision, bent a shot from the top left corner of the penalty area into the back right corner of the net over a diving keeper.

With time dwindling, the Skyhawks served chance after chance, finally breaking through in the 89th minute when Francisco Pinto arced service from 35 yards out toward the center of the penalty box, where a waiting Guintini connected mid-stride for the game-winner.

Junior Lucas Martin made one save on the afternoon, while Lubbock Christian's Connor Pettigrew made a pair of saves between the posts. Six total cautions were issued, with the Chaparrals taking ownership of five.
