Fort Lewis falls in double overtime heartbreaker to Colorado Mesa in RMAC Quarterfinals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon, falling 1-0 to fourth-seeded Colorado Mesa University in double overtime at Community Hospital Unity Field in the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal match.

The Skyhawks (10-5-3) battled the Mavericks (10-4-4) through more than 100 minutes of scoreless soccer before Jenelle Arenibas netted the golden goal in the 102nd minute, sending Colorado Mesa into the RMAC Tournament Semifinals.

Neither side found much separation in the opening 45 minutes, with Colorado Mesa holding a 3-1 advantage in shots. Junior Kailin Gudewicz registered Fort Lewis' lone first-half attempt in the 20th minute, sending a shot wide of the right post. The Mavericks earned three corner kicks but were unable to capitalize as the teams entered halftime scoreless.

The pace picked up in the second half as Colorado Mesa tested sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Lujan early. The Mavericks put two shots on frame in the opening 10 minutes, but Lujan turned away attempts from Ellie Duncan and Mari Ige to keep the match level.

Fort Lewis began generating opportunities midway through the half, with junior Kiana Jamerson sending an attempt wide in the 62nd minute before Gudewicz put the Skyhawks' first shot on goal in the 73rd. Colorado Mesa goalkeeper Keely Wieczorek made the save to preserve the scoreless tie.

Lujan continued to anchor the Skyhawks' defensive effort down the stretch, recording two additional saves against Olivia Bariao-Arce in the 80th and 83rd minutes. Fort Lewis countered with late opportunities from senior Jenna Salazar and freshman Maleia Dayao, but neither side could break through before regulation expired.

The Skyhawks generated two shots in the first overtime period, including an early attempt from sophomore Tristen Fought and a shot from Salazar in the 99th minute. Colorado Mesa nearly ended the contest in the 96th minute when Parker Mairs struck the crossbar, but the Skyhawks escaped the opening overtime period with the match still scoreless.

Just 1:25 into the second overtime period, Colorado Mesa found the game-winner. The Mavericks carried the ball forward from midfield and worked their way into the penalty area. Battling senior Amber Otts on defense, Katie Lozano-Monjaraz connected with Arenibas on a give-and-go sequence, finding her in front of the goal. Arenibas chipped the ball past Lujan, who dove to her left, to secure the 1-0 victory. The goal marked Arenibas' fourth of the season.
