LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Addyson Carpentier enjoyed a career outing with two goals, tripling her career total, to lead the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Lubbock Christian University on Saturday afternoon.
Fort Lewis improved to 1-0-1 on the season, while Lubbock Christian moved to 0-1 following its season opener.
The Skyhawks held an 11-8 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Lubbock Christian played a physical match and was whistled for 16 fouls to go along with one yellow card.
Sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Lujan collected three saves in a 90-minute effort. Carpentier's goals were assisted by freshman Maleia Dayao and senior Amber Otts. Otts, Carpentier, Lujan, juniors Lucy Bernino, Mia Duncan and Kailin Gudewicz, sophomore Tristen Fought and freshman Emma Gurule each played the full 90 minutes.
The teams played evenly through the opening 15 minutes, with the lone shot coming on a blocked attempt off the foot of Salazar in the fifth minute. The Skyhawks found their opening in the 17th minute after earning a corner kick. Dayao lined up the set piece and sent a service into the box, finding the head of Carpentier, who placed it inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Lubbock Christian had its first chance of the day in the 20th minute with a shot that drifted off target. Dayao put a shot on goal in the 26th minute, resulting in the Chaps' first save of the match. Lujan answered with her first save in the 35th minute to preserve the lead. Lubbock Christian found an equalizer with just seconds remaining in the half, earning favorable field position on a free kick and capitalizing with a low shot to the left side of the net.
The 1-1 tie carried into the second half, where physical play resulted in numerous fouls and the game's second yellow card in the 55th minute. One of those fouls led to a free kick for Otts from nearly 40 yards out. Otts sent her attempt on goal, and the opposing keeper was unable to secure the ball, allowing Carpentier to clean up the rebound for her second goal of the day.
Lujan was tested again in the 65th minute amid congestion in front of the net, but the sophomore keeper read the play well and pounced on the loose ball for another save. She faced a similar sequence minutes later, this time beating a Chaps forward to a dangerous through ball.
Lubbock Christian earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 89th minute, with the second set piece leading to a strong header destined for the back of the net. Lujan made an athletic move to her left for the save of the match, preserving the one-goal advantage. The home team made several desperate attempts in the final moments, but the Skyhawks held firm as the clock wound down on the 2-1 win.
Fort Lewis (1-0-1) makes its home debut on Saturday, Sept. 5, with an 11 a.m. first whistle against West Texas A&M. The Buffs fell to Western Colorado University by a 2-1 final on Thursday and face New Mexico Highlands this afternoon. West Texas A&M will also play Adams State on Thursday before heading to Durango.
