Skyhawks fall in three sets to South Dakota Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team (5-5, 0-2 RMAC) closed out its opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Saturday, falling in three sets to South Dakota Mines (8-2, 2-0 RMAC) inside the King Center.

The Hardrockers took the match by scores of 25-16, 30-28, and 25-14. Fort Lewis hit .138 for the match compared to a .301 clip for South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers held advantages in kills (56-32), digs (52-39), blocks (8-4), and service aces (4-0).

Senior Jordan DeJesus and senior Alina Nunez paced the Skyhawks with seven kills apiece, while sophomore Caroline Munson followed with five. DeJesus added a match-high 14 digs and two blocks for a well-rounded outing. Sophomore Alyx Daugherty chipped in nine digs, while sophomore Arianna Reyna and junior Addie Garn dished out 14 and 11 assists, respectively.

South Dakota Mines established its offense early in the opening set, hitting .410 behind 20 kills. Fort Lewis remained within striking distance through the early stages after kills from Munson, Caleigh Sommers, Eloise Bearcomesout, and DeJesus helped the Skyhawks to a 6-6 tie. The Hardrockers began to create separation from there, building an 11-7 lead before eventually stretching the margin to 17-9. Fort Lewis picked up a block from Ellie Ames and Bearcomesout as part of a late push, but South Dakota Mines maintained control to take the opener 25-16.

Fort Lewis responded with its best offensive showing of the night in the second set, totaling 18 kills while hitting .200. The teams traded points throughout the early going before the Skyhawks used kills from Nunez, Sommers, Bearcomesout, and DeJesus to take an 11-9 advantage. South Dakota Mines worked its way back to even the score at 13-13 and eventually took a 16-13 lead, but Fort Lewis answered with three straight points to tie things up.

The back-and-forth battle continued down the stretch with neither side able to create much separation. Fort Lewis pulled ahead 22-20 before the Hardrockers responded to eventually earn set point at 24-22. Garn put away a kill before an attacking error evened the score at 24-all. The teams continued to trade blows from there, and a kill from Nunez tied the set at 26-26. Reyna followed with a kill to give the Skyhawks set point at 27-26, but South Dakota Mines answered. Bearcomesout put Fort Lewis back in front at 28-27 before the Hardrockers closed the frame with three consecutive points for the 30-28 win.

South Dakota Mines carried the momentum into the third set and quickly jumped ahead 6-2. Fort Lewis battled back with four straight points, highlighted by a kill from Cambria Freymuth, to even the score at 6-6. The Hardrockers regained control with a 6-1 run for a 12-7 advantage. The Skyhawks remained within five at 16-11 following a Nunez kill, but South Dakota Mines rattled off six unanswered points to pull away. Fort Lewis picked up a late block from DeJesus and Munson before the Hardrockers finished off the match with a 25-14 decision.

South Dakota Mines' Cate Warren led all players with 19 kills while hitting .400. Lexi Glendenning followed with 10 kills on a .400 clip as the Hardrockers finished the match with 56 kills.
