Skyhawks top Firestorm 27-9 in home opener

Defense forces three turnovers, nine tackles for loss

DURANGO, Colo. – Jacob Morris threw for two touchdowns to lead a second-half offensive surge that powered the Fort Lewis College football team to a 1-0 start to the 2026 campaign and a 27-9 victory over Arizona Christian University (0-1) on Saturday night under the brand-new lights of Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
 
Fort Lewis, despite being outgained 288 yards to 218, managed to limit Arizona Christian to just three field goals from marks of 42, 35, and 25 yards each off the boot of Lukas Hall, and took advantage of 12 Firestorm penalties that accounted for 108 yards and four Skyhawks first downs.
 
Morris accounted for 167 yards passing on 14 completions in 23 attempts (60.9 percent), all while connecting with Solomon Latimer for a 35-yard jump ball in the left corner to retake the lead with 2:19 left to play in the third quarter, and again with Michael Collins as he threw back across the field for a 17-yard score in the final three minutes to seal the win in Fort Lewis' home opener.
 
Zachary Gaumont added the final FLC score early in the final quarter, using quite the stutter-step on a double-reverse to slip past two defenders and in for the 10-yard touchdown. Lucas Schmitten had a career day, going 3-for-3 on point-after attempts while adding a pair of 51-yard and 25-yard field goals in his first two collegiate attempts.
 
Craig Cooper made the only sack for ACU with a nine-yard drop. Morris' lone blemish was an untimely interception on the first play of the game as the ball ricocheted off the back of an ACU defender's helmet and into the arms of the awaiting Jax James for a 24-yard return.
 
Tailan King made his first interception of the year, his third overall, and added a nine-yard return. Drennan Dowell, making his first start in his fifth career game, boasted a career-high seven tackles, including one solo tackle for a four-yard loss, grabbed his first interception and made an eight-yard return, and scooped up his first fumble for another 12-yard return.
 
Fort Lewis registered three sacks among nine total tackles for a combined 34 yards lost, with none other than the Skyhawks "Agent 0" Trenton Sullivan paving the way, as the fifth-year defensive back racked up 12 tackles, nine assisted and three solo, and 2.5 tackles for nine yards lost with a three-yard solo sack. Porter Delnoce picked up right where he left off last year, making a career-high 10 tackles by way of six solo and four assisted stops. Kameron Lewis forced his second career fumble, and Samual Ballas his fifth career forced fumble with a three-yard strip-sack.
 
Notes
-Fort Lewis starts the season 1-0 for the first time since 2019.
-The Skyhawks now lead Arizona Christian 3-2 all-time and 2-1 on Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
-FLC was outgained by 70 yards, had possession for just 19 minutes and 36 seconds of the game, and held ACU to just three field goals.
-The Skyhawks went 3-for-3 in the red zone.
-Jacob Morris matched his career-high with two passing touchdowns.
-Freshman KhaVontae Paul led Fort Lewis with 26 rushing yards on eight carries.
-Trenton Sullivan set new career highs in total tackles (12) and assisted tackles (nine) with his first 10+ tackle performance.
-Porter Delnoce reached double-digit tackles for the first time, setting new career highs in total tackles (10) and solo tackles (six).
-Drennan Dowell recovered his first fumble, hauled in his first interception, and set new career highs with seven total tackles, two solo tackles, and five assisted tackles.
-Samuel Ballas and Kameron Lewis forced fumbles.

Fort Lewis will remain at home for another week to host New Mexico Highlands University (2-0) for the start of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. Tailgating will begin at 4 p.m. in the Art Lot.
