Matt Steinfeldt joined the Fort Lewis College football program as the offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and recruiting coordinator prior to the 2010 spring season. He begins his second year running the Skyhawk offensive assault in 2011.
His recruiting areas include the southern Denver Metro Area, Monument, and New Mexico.
During his first season in Durango, he helped the Skyhawk passing game amass 2,807 yards, 271 completions, and 20 touchdowns.
As expected, honors rolled in for his troops, including wide receiver Justin Johnson (second team All-America, second team All-Super Region #3, first team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Cactus Bowl all-star game), quarterback Tim Jenkins (second team All-RMAC), and offensive lineman Luke Geller (third team All-RMAC). RMAC All-Academic honors were bestowed on four of Steinfeldt’s offensive players in 2010.
He came to the Skyhawks from Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he served under the guidance of former Baylor and Kentucky head coach Guy Morriss — the Lone Star Conference North Coach of the Year in 2009. Steinfeldt was charged with directing the wide receivers for the 2009 LSC North Championship team.
Prior to joining the TAMUC coaching staff, he served as an assistant coach at Southern Oregon University. There he mentored wide receivers in addition to serving as the academic coordinator for the football program.
Steinfeldt previously served as offensive coordinator at Louisburg College (N.C.), where his offense provided the team with explosive statistical outputs — including three games of over 500 yards of offense, one with more than 600 yards, and two games scoring 50 or more points. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Steinfeldt was a professor in the English department.
In his first stint as an offensive coordinator, Steinfeldt directed the Anderson University Ravens’ offense to 419.8 yards a contest, a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference best. In two years, he coached nine all-conference performers, including a tailback who ran for over 1,300 yards and was named a third team All-American.
In 2004, he served as the recruiting coordinator and linebackers coach at Kentucky State University. The Thorobreds finished 7-4 and third place in the historic Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with losses to three teams in the final Top 25 Division II poll.
Steinfeldt came to KSU from NCAA Division I Morehead State University, where he served as wide receivers coach for an Eagles’ team that won back-to-back Pioneer Football League titles in 2002 and ‘03. In both of those seasons, the Eagles had five receivers catch more than 25 balls, including one player who set multiple school receiving records. While at Morehead, he worked under the leadership of head coach Matt Ballard, who was twice named PFL South Coach of the Year during Steinfeldt’s tenure on staff.
The Green Bay, Wis., native earned his bachelor's degree in history and theology from Valparaiso University in 2000 after being a three-year starter for the Crusaders. He went on to earn his master's degree at Morehead State University in 2004.
Steinfeldt is currently single and resides in Durango.
