Fort Lewis College Athletics

Head Coach David Oberholtzer enters his 11th season as the head men's soccer coach at Fort Lewis College in 2026. Since taking over in 2016, Oberholtzer has guided the Skyhawks to an RMAC regular-season championship, back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, an NCAA Division II National Quarterfinal appearance, and a growing collection of RMAC, All-South Central Region, and All-American performers. He has amassed an 84-61-26 career record alongside a 57-38-13 record against RMAC opponents. 

In 2025, Fort Lewis finished 9-4-4 overall with a 5-3-2 mark in RMAC play, and reached as high as No. 13 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Skyhawks finished the season third in shots per game (17.65), fifth in goals per game (2.65), fifth in points per game (7.76), eighth in shots on-goal per game (7.65), and eighth in assists per game (2.47) across all of NCAA Division II

Freshman Alessio Andreottola produced one of the most prolific seasons in program history, becoming an NCAA Division II statistical champion in both total assists and assists per game, finishing with 17 assists and 1.06 assists per match. He also ranked second nationally in shots per game (3.94), 16th in shots on goal per game (1.63), and tied for 11th in total points (29) during the regular season. Andreottola was named RMAC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, joining former Skyhawk Anton Hjalmarsson as the only pair of individuals in conference history to capture both awards in the same season, as well as First-Team D2CCA All-American and Third-Team United Soccer Coaches All-American. Lorenz Guintini, who added 13 goals, five game-winning goals, and four assists for 30 points, and Casey Stracher, who racked up four goals and two assists for 10 points as a defender, joined Andreottola as D2CCA All-Americans and First-Team All-South Central Region selections, giving Fort Lewis three D2CCA All-Americans for the season. 

Back in 2024, Oberholtzer led Fort Lewis to a 14-4-6 record and its deepest NCAA Tournament run since the 2011 national championship, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals. The Skyhawks ranked sixth nationally in shutouts (11) and 25th nationally in team goals-against average (0.991). Goalkeeper Lucas Martin ranked second nationally in save percentage (84.4%), fifth in saves (92), and tied for fourth in shutouts (10). David Citron earned First-Team All-RMAC, First-Team All-South Central Region, Third-Team D2CCA All-American and First-Team Academic All-American honors. Tomas Duenes, Gabriel Legendre, Jakob Larson and Casey Stracher also earned All-South Central Region recognition, with all six regional selections earning All-RMAC honors. Freshman Fabrizio Aguilera was named RMAC Freshman of the Year.

Oberholtzer engineered one of the largest turnarounds in program history in 2023, taking Fort Lewis from 4-11-2 in 2022 to 12-5-4 and the RMAC regular-season championship. The Skyhawks ranked 17th nationally in goals per game (2.43), 20th in goal differential (+23), 20th in assists per game (2.12), and 15th in points per game (7.18). Fort Lewis also climbed as high as No. 10 nationally in the United Soccer Coaches poll.

Oberholtzer was named RMAC Coach of the Year, while Anton Hjalmarsson earned RMAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Hjalmarsson finished the season with 11 goals, 11 assists and 33 points, ranking 34th nationally in goals, 12th in assists and ninth in total points. He earned First-Team All-RMAC, First-Team D2CCA All-South Central Region and Second-Team D2CCA All-American honors. Loic Jean-Baptiste also earned First-Team All-RMAC and First-Team All-Region honors, while Gabriel Legendre and Kaden Schufft earned Second-Team All-Region recognition. Tomas Duenes and Schufft joined Hjalmarsson, Jean-Baptiste and Legendre among the All-RMAC honorees.

2022 was a season of rebuilding for Fort Lewis, with Gabriel Legendre earning Second-Team All-RMAC honors. Isaac Garro, Loic Jean-Baptiste, and Maximilian Meier received honorable mention recognition. In 2021, the Skyhawks finished 8-8-1, highlighted by Tomas Duenes earning RMAC Freshman of the Year and Second-Team All-RMAC honors. Milen Manchev also earned second-team recognition, while Peter Byrne, Gabriel Legendre, Quinn Bosanko, and Maximilian Meier received honorable mention honors.

During his first five seasons as head coach, Oberholtzer established Fort Lewis as a consistent RMAC postseason contender, producing three 10-win seasons and multiple RMAC Tournament semifinal appearances. The 2019 team finished 11-5-4, with Loic Jean-Baptiste earning First-Team All-RMAC honors. The 2020 season was shortened and disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before returning to Durango, Oberholtzer spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton. In 2015, he helped the Flyers win the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament's second round. Dayton led the nation in scoring offense, while Oberholtzer helped coach the A-10 Midfielder of the Year, five all-conference performers, and an Academic All-American.

Oberholtzer began his coaching career at Fort Lewis as an assistant coach from 2009-12. During those four seasons, the Skyhawks went 77-9-7, won two NCAA Division II national championships in 2009 and 2011, two RMAC regular-season championships and two RMAC Tournament titles, and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

He began his Fort Lewis career as a player, competing for the Skyhawks in 2006 and 2007. He was a member of the 2006 NCAA Division II national runner-up team and earned Second-Team All-RMAC and RMAC All-Tournament Team honors as a senior in 2007.

A native of Tempe, Ariz., and a 2003 graduate of Corona del Sol High School, he majored in Exercise Science-Exercise Specialist when he graduated from Fort Lewis College in 2008. He and his wife, Megan, have two children: Porter and Piper.
