Shawn Jakubowski

Shawn Jakubowski enters his second year as Associate Athletic Director for External Relations in 2025–26.

Before moving into administration, Jakubowski led the Skyhawks cross country and track & field programs to historic achievements. In his final cross country season, both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the NCAA Championships, finishing 13th and 20th, respectively. Senior Katie Heck and freshman Linda Weigang earned First Team All-America honors, while the indoor track season featured three All-Conference performances, capped by Heck’s 15th-place finish at nationals. The outdoor season saw Hannah Hartwell claim First Team All-America honors in the 10k and Heck secure Second Team recognition.

The 2022–23 campaign was a standout year marked by program records, personal bests for nearly every student-athlete, and multiple All-America honors. The women’s cross country team finished seventh at the RMAC Championships and 10th at regionals, while the men placed eighth and 11th, respectively. FLC also hosted the RMAC Championships at Hillcrest Golf Course, with Jakubowski playing a key role in event planning. Junior Katie Fankhouser earned All-Conference, All-Region, and First Team All-America honors, highlighting the season.

In outdoor track, his athletes set new program standards across the board. Junior Brandy Ray became the program’s first-ever All-Conference honoree in the 10k, while freshman Bean Minor earned Second Team recognition in the 5k. Fankhouser captured the RMAC title in the 1500m, advanced through NCAA Championship prelims, and delivered a National Runner-Up finish to earn First Team All-America status.

Jakubowski’s coaching journey at FLC began as the men’s assistant cross country coach in 2021. Before arriving in Durango, he served as head coach at Berea College (2015–2020), guiding the programs to six conference titles, two NCAA National Championship appearances, and a national runner-up in the 3k steeplechase. He also oversaw the school’s transition from NAIA/USCAA to NCAA Division III and served as Berea’s Sports Information Director from 2015–2019, managing everything from statistics and game operations to media relations.

Prior to Berea, Jakubowski was head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan University, where he launched the school’s first track & field program, recruited 52 athletes in seven months, and won a conference championship in the program’s inaugural season.

A former standout student-athlete at Berea College, Jakubowski was a member of the record-setting 4x800m relay team that finished fifth at nationals, earning First Team All-America honors. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Technology from Berea (2006) and an M.S. in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University (2012).

Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Jakubowski lives in Bayfield with his wife Mariah—an FLC softball alumna and athletic trainer at Fort Lewis College—and still logs plenty of miles on the trails around Durango.
